yea but if you follow the oil life indicater all the way down to 0% or whatever some oil changes could last like 20k miles. that is not good.

i say anywhere between 3000-6000 miles with Normal driving is fine for oil changes. regardless of what the oil life monitor says.

With new vehicles i always changed the oil over to synthetic as soon as I got it home.
Again at 500 miles
Again at 1500 miles
And finally at 3000 miles to put it on a 4000 mile interval.
Just me being paranoid, but I NEVER had engine issues with any of my new cars. Lots of brake and transmission problems, but never anything to do with the engine.

That definately is a loaded question. But a good one to say the least. As u can see there are a lot of opinions out there. Changing oil and filter is like cheap insurance for the motor ! But for me personally there is such thing as overkill. Especially with the technology we have these day's with oil and filters. I run mine down to 50% on the meter. This for me is very conservative and protects my investment. The oil life meter is more advanced than u think!

Your whine noise may be from one of your belts. I had a whine the other week, thought it was the AC Belt, and I was right. I was told the edges of the belt were frayed quite a bit. Dealer told me they would check the alignment of the pullies since the car only had 3k miles on it. Not really a big issue if its just a belt, if it keeps happening then you've got an issue.

My dealership told me they didn't want to see my car until I had 3500 miles on it, this was last July. I told the service advisor that it may be that time this year before I have those miles. He repeated, WE don't want to see it before then. I now have 2600 miles on it after 1400 months of ownership. I plan to take it in as soon as the weather breaks but I do start it and allow it to run and get up to operating temps before I shut if off. They told me I'm doing the right thing. With having a take own Crown Vic, my car is reserved for fair weather driving and day off cruising.

The rear diff fluid needs to be changed at 1,500 too btw. Thats in the owners manual.
Where in the owners manual does it say that the rear dif fluid needs to be changed at 1,500 miles? Mine says that you change it at the first oil change after 50,000 miles (Severe Service) or 100,000 miles (Normal Service).

1,500 miles if you are racing.

Ac Delco is starting to make ecore filters(weak plastic rings hold the filter media in place) avoid them. If you store it during the winter, you might want to change it as soon as it leaves storage, regardless of how many miles are on it. Moisture will get into the crank case when sitting over long periods.

I find it amazing actually having worked on cars for a good portion of my life that all this voodoo about oil changes still exists, especially the 3,000 miles per change deal. Its pretty damn clear in the manual when not only should you change oil, but every other maintence peice also. The Camaro even comes with a sensor that tells you when to change but at least 50% of people choose not believe it. Bottom line is that oil is leaps and bounds cleaner and engines are much more efficient than when 3,000 miles a change was the true standard about 40 years ago.....

Quoting the 2010 SS Camaro Manual:

When the "Change Engine Oil Soon" message displays service is required for the vehicle as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles. If driving under the best conditions, the engine oil life system might not indicate the need for vehicle service for more than a year. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the oil life system must be reset.

Now from my 97 Silverado 4x4 under normal conditions:

Change the oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 12 months -- whichever occurs first. Driving a vehicle with a fully warmed engine under highway conditions causes engine oil to break down slower.

Now there is a blurb about changing the oil in the Silverado for exterme use or dusty conditions every three months 3,000 miles. But one thing should be pretty clear, under normal driving conditions you can rely on the Camaro's oil life sensor and change the oil when it gets low or you go a year without service.
