Also, I'm still not a 100% sure that I should bring it to the dealer because I am genuinely afraid that they'll just **** more shit up rather than fix it.

Furthermore, a member from my area was kind enough to offer to meet up and compare engine sounds. So we'll see what happens with that.

The sound is like a bearing type noise, and does dissipate when you gas it. Definitely a very weird sound/dilemma because it doesn't seem to be affecting anything.

How many miles do you have on yours?
THAT'S FUNNY STUFF

2005 GMC SIERRA LIFTER AND CAMSHAFT ISSUE

This post is related to a 2005 GMC Sierra truck, but check the "Search" button for related issues.

I thought I had a serpintine belt problem, but learned it was a bit more than what it turned out to be. I experienced a "chirping" and then "ticking" noise at startup and gradually went away at warmer temperatures, but not completely. The compression also seemed less and during low RMP's as well.

There are a few threads on potential 2010-2011 Camaro Lifter issues with both AFM and non AFM engines in the C5 Search option.

I can't speak for my Camaro (LS3), but i just went through a similar issue with my 2005 GMC Sierra this past week and a half.

The "ticking" noise gradually growing louder on the GMC Sierra the past few months. There is only 33K miles with no internal engine mods. I took the truck in for an initial check with a family mechanic and his diagnostic was either a Lifter issue or a Camshaft issue.

I then took the truck into a Chevrolet dealer for further review. It was determined there were two noises, one from the Lifters and one from the Camshaft. Luckily, I had an extended warranty in place. The GM Adjuster determined one of the Cam Lobes was worn down as well as 2 of the Lifters. His recomendation was replacement of the Camshaft and only 2 of the Lifters, as well as associated gaskets.

I had researched this issue and found a few GM Service Bulletins concerning this issue and in the event a Camshaft Lobe was found to be worn down, the Camshaft and ALL of the Liftters (16 total) were to be replaced.

I let the Chevrolet Dealer know there was a GM Service Bulletin issued for this exact problem and mentioned that all of the Lifters were to be replaced, not just the 2 that GM Adjuster recommended. The Dealer gave me a GM Hotline number to call and review the decision. The GM associate explained the final call was with the site GM Adjuster who made the initial call. The explanation was the Service Bulletin was "Recommended", but the ultimate authority lies with the onsite GM Adjuster.

I was disapointed with this decision, but life moves on. I spoke with my Dealer and requested all of the Lifters be replaced, at my expense. All of my research, as well as my experience, determined replacement of all of the Lifters should be done when a new Camshaft is installed. I was charged for the balance of the cost for 14 lifters and zero labor costs for installation.

I picked up the truck today and it's back to normal. Runs good, but compression still seems low.

Hopefully your problem is not related to the Lifters, but check out the "Search" for related Lifer issues if there is a significant "chirping" or "ticking" for several minutes. I'll upate the Service Bulletins later next week.

I hope the OP has a quick fix.

Thanks bro, I really appreciate it.

I have a question though. Was the camshaft worn down because of the faulty lifters (which is what I'm 90% sure happened) or was it a bad roller?

The interesting thing is that you're experiencing this at 33k, while I just broke 900mi yesterday, not to mention that it was doing it since day one. This is why I asked about the cam being worn down. If this has been happening to me since I got the damn thing then I'm guessing there is something wrong with cam alignment in relation to the rollers, and it's not the lifters causing this noise (since I don't hear any ticking), if it is in fact what you're talking about that's causing the noise.

I really hope Jeff at Customer Service sees this thread because I would really like to know if there's a TSB in the works since I've seen at least 4 other members experiencing the same problem.

At this point however, I think it's time for me to stop jerking it and just take it in to the dealer. And indeed, I do hope it is a quick and painless fix.

Hey Raptor...11 months old with 5800 miles. That would be cool if we could meet and compare noises but...CA - NY...that's a drive!

Hey Chandler if you're still with me, I'm gonna show the dealer the following TSB and see what he says. If you want you can try showing yours as well.

Oh also, Chandler check your crankshaft pulley and let me know if it seems wobbly when the engine is idling.

I met a guy in a parking lot several months ago and the first thing he asked me was can you start your car and pop the hood. I said sure. He had the wobbly lower pulley and wanted to see mine. He got pissed when he saw mine. Dealer told him his was fine, and compared to mine with no wobble, his was not fine. But anyway, my pulley looks good!
Put the car on jack stands today to try and find the noise. Today it was rainy and cold and the noise would only sound just above idle so I had my daughter rev the engine to about 1K and let off. As the idle dropped, I was checking different areas from above and below as the noise would start and stop. It is definitely coming from the front of the engine somewhere. That is as far as I got today. The belts could very well be the cause and a little belt dressing spray is an easy test so I will try that soon but they look fine...no mis-alignment, etc. As far as the cam issue, I dont think that applies to my car since I am not hearing any lifter noise but I will keep it in mind.

Hey chandler I made a video of my car, see if you can pinpoint the noise, it makes it a few times throughout the video.

Also is that whining from the alternator area normal?

I would recommend contacting your local dealership for more information. They should be able to assist you and give you a better idea about which noises are normal. Please feel free to keep us posted.

Tricia, GM Customer Service.
