Amen to that. This is not for the faint of heart. Do your reading even if
you are not the one doing the tuning.

Sh!t I hope there's no tamper indicator, and I know its true that the dealership can tell if an ecu has been flashed at all... So hopefully swapping the ecu method will work. Andy we will be doing some business in the near future hp tuners + ecu for me

Absolutely true.

I've been running with my own tune in my LS1 for 2 years now. I agree it is not for the faint of heart - there is a lot of stuff you can mess up. By trade I am a instrumentation and control systems engineer at a nuclear power plant and there are editable parameters in HPTuners that I won't even think about touching.

On my diesel forum they have sections for HP and EFI where the members can swap tunes and post up results from custom tunes they have done. There is definitely a LOT to be learned with either of those softwares.

I think I would be interested in maybe getting a HP Tuner and an ecm - not sure how much we are talking about price wise, as I need to look that up yet. Anyone have a ballpark on price? I am sure it will probably be worth it.

AFAIK, all OBD-II cars are legally required to have the same physical connector. The protocol used varies; older OBD-II GMs use VPW, while I'm pretty sure that newer GMs (and I think ALL brands -- was it made a legal requirement?) use CAN-bus. Maybe someone can confirm the CAN-bus question...

I'd skip the hand held tuners, not worth the money. A serious tuning tool like HPtuners is great but you'd better know what you're doing. I had my car dyno tuned at a reputable performance shop and that's the only way I'd do it.
