I am not really up on the tuners that are out there for the newer cars. I had used a hypertech on my 98 SS but I am wondering which plug n play tuner will give the best options for the money. I am not going to get too in depth with mods - probably headers, cai, exhaust and maybe a cam later on. Thanks for your opinions....

i'm gonna get another ECU so i can tune that one and leave my stock one in the garage for when i wanna swap for warranty work. ADM performance is on my list... but if your looking for handhelds, go for diablosport predator(i hear there's lots of options)... or efi live, hp tuners if u got a laptop... whatever u want man. research them for yourself though....

Those who are getting an extra ECM....
I know you put it in when you are going in for warranty work, but I am guessing if you have modded the car it will not run right...maybe even dangerous for the car? Is that right?
I am doing a heads/cam car.

I am not going to mess with hand held programmers. waste of money IMO. granted they can get you some power and allow you to change some things. but for the same money that you spend on those will get you a mail order tune. or if you are lucky, a dyno tune

Hiding the tune will no longer be important with a cam and head work.

They can void the warranty if they desire, and the mods are obvious to a decent tech.

That works when there are no other mods, or just cai, catback - maybe.

I plan on working with a local shop. I'll have them use whichever tuner they are familular with ... my plans eventually include some sort of K&N FIPK, Exhaust, Magnacharger (or some sort of top mount supercharger with supporting equipment), and a dyno tune ..... Like my 04 cobra, I'll keep the tune as safe as possible since it will be my daily driver.

Once our camaro gets here we will first develop a dyno proven tune for it and then start tuning remotely.Many of our customers have opted for both our Hp tuner software and an extra ecm.This allows you to keep your factory ecm un touched but still gives you the ability to make changes via email with us.

Will the 5th Gen use the same OBD-II port as the 4th Gen or will I need to buy a new connecter for my HPTuners module?

Andy (ADM Perf) - That's a great idea! If I already have HPTuners but buy an extra ECM from you, would I be eligible for a discount on the tune? You'll probably be getting a call from me as soon as my first round of mods come in.

Those who are planning on a physical ECM swap to maintain warrantee, may want to wait and see if the Camaro's ECM has a security tamper tape on it. If I am not mistaken GM started to put these on the cars in the last couple years. SO as soon as you cut or peel the tape the warrantee gets voided. Maybe someone more tune savvy can answer this.

Also, if you go for a Handheld programmer, you can download the factory tune and store it as a digital file and re-upload it in the future if need be. The good thing with this technique is each time you add a mod you can work with the tuner to get a new tune, if one is developed for the mod you purchase.

You can do that with HPTuners also, but with both the handheld AND computer based tuners, the dealer can tell if the ECM has EVER been flashed(even if it is to return it to the stock tune). So you would need a backup ECM with a handheld as well (if the tamper indicator doesn't exist - thanks for the heads up on that one).

I recommend HPTuners if you have the $$ because the VCM Scanner is worth its weight in gold. It tells you all about any parameter you want in real time, so you know EXACTLY how your engine is running and what needs to be improved upon. Handhelds don't compare when it comes to providing feedback.
