My local dealer has a "Quick Change" oil open to public at the front of their property. They have advised the techs who work there that they are not authorized to work on Corvette Z06, ZR1's, and the upcoming ZL1. Those must be forwarded to the GM Service Dept due to more complicated systems. The service mgr also told me that with the diff cooler being part of the tran fluid cooling, etc, he would recommend NEVER to let none GM dealers touch the car. Too many nuances that ARE not usual or customary and subject to error.

This^
You will not be able to have warranty work performed otherwise.

Too funny.

Back to reality. Never let the car out of your sight if possible. Whenever in for service:

Do a walk around at drop off, and insist the car's perfect condition be noted on the the RO.

Put on the RO - No Test Drives Without Owner Present. Put same note taped to steering wheel.

Reach an understanding that if the car is damaged, the damager will need a ventilator to breathe.

The reality is it varies widely and is a crap shoot on what you will experience. I've met great technicians that have repaired cars perfectly, and I've met knuckledragging douchebags that shouldn't be working on a lawn mower.

I had a Z06 once with an air leak under the dash - cold air blowing in on feet. I get the car back a week later, no more cold air - great. RO said - resealed cowl. A few weeks later I see something hanging down by my feet... a used shop rag. I pull the hush panel down, the whole under dash area by the steering column had been stuffed full of various used shop rags and old carpet padding. "Corvette Trained" technician.

I also asked him specific questions about dealer installed option YM8 - IDENTIFICATION - LPO PERSONALIZATION OPTION. He said he didn't know what that was nor would he let me see his ZL1 tech training materials. He wants to keep them pristine. He may need a refresher course before the cars actually arrive!!
I answered this is another thread, the "YM8" LPO option code is for the dealer installed options you may have ordered with the car, such as custom carpeted floors mats, trunk cargo net,body-colored grill, etc.
Theses are options which are not installed at the plant, they are sent to the dealership just prior to the car arriving for the dealer to install.

And sorry, there is no special training for the ZL1

Not true, there is no special training for the ZL1.

The Corvette ZR1's did require special training before a dealer could take delivery of them,we had to have a certified tech before we got one, along with the purchase of special ZR1 essential tools.

If there are V certified techs at the caddy dealers, i'm sure there must be zl1 certified techs as well. Just verify with your dealer, develop a relationship with the tech, and request him every time.

The systems on the ZL1 while new, are not anything technicians haven't dealt with in the last 30 years. Scan the system for the code, check the wiring continuity from processor to component, test component and repair as nessicary. ABS, traction control, suspension control, electronic transmissions, and engine controls are all built around existing technologies that have been in use since the first electronic ignition system. Finding a good technician, ZL1 certified or not, is the biggest hurdle.

According to Scott Settlemire, the dealership has to have a certified ZL1 tech to work on the car. As a matter of fact, the dealer cannot even sell a ZL1 if they do NOT have this tech at the dealership.

I am aware that there are special requirements that a dealer must have in place in order to service a vehicle. Chances are if your dealer can service a Corvette ZR1, then they'll be able to meet the needs of a ZL1 Camaro.

There are also special instructions for these vehicles, such as the removal of the spring spacers post-delivery, or how to properly remove the belly pan to change the oil. Dealers should have their techs up-to-date well before the cars arrive.

Beyond that...I'm not sure they need to go to "ZL1 school" before they can touch the car...

Nope, not the case. It was with the ZR1's however.
Or I guess I should put it this way....there is no "prerequisite" for training to receive a ZL1 like there was with the ZR1,and even the Volt.
We have a ZL1 coming in,and we do not have a "certified" ZL1 tech.,however the tech.that will be PDI'ing the car is very well trained in Camaro's and Corvette's.
