On the flip side, I was thinking about doing the same thing CAGS does on my v6 to keep the MPGs up.

It does lug the engine for me at least. Try driving at 18-19mph in fourth. You can feel the engine stumbling and shaking trying to get the car moving.

Before I got a tune, whenever CAGS activated I would just shift to 3rd. I do it now even after my tune. Call it my version of CAGS.

i feel a car should NEVER lock you out of agear, unless its the parking gear or low gear when at high speeds. just the idea behind seem not right to me.

The gas guzzler tax for the camaro would probably have been around $3,000. Do you feel that not being locked out of gear is worth $3,000?

look at all the performance cars in the SS price range. mustang, 370z, STI etc. do they lock you out of a gear ? no, do they have gas tax ? no

see where the problem is ?

well there's your problem. downshift to third at that speed, or even 2nd.

you may be missing the point.

When I read these threads, I get the sense that some people think we put CAGS in there just to upset them. Nothing could be further from the truth.

How many Trucks does Nissan sell? (answer: not nearly as many as GM...)

Remember -the U.S. Government assigns a CAFE number that must be met and that involves every car and truck we build under a certain GVWR.

In order to offer Americans cars and trucks that meet all of their needs, we must be judicious in the things we do to hit those numbers.

I have only hit the CAGS perhaps two or three times in the past dozen years. (we had it on the 4th gens as well) - once you get used to it, you learn how to avoid the threshold for CAGS.

We (the manufacturers) don't choose the EPA "route" - but we do need to engineer cars and trucks to hit the CAFE numbers across the entire product portfolio.

We could, perhaps, stop building a bunch of Silverados and Sierras and drop CAGS - but that would not be beneficial to our stockholders or America.
