In my opinion, nitrogen for cars is just a way for tire stores to make more money. I work in the aviation industry and we still have to use temp charts when filling tires with nitrogen. It DOES expand and contract with temp changes. We use it because of the moisture in air freezes inside the tires at altitude and as you can guess ice inside a tire when a plane lands would be bad.
I have a problem with my TPMS telling me the tires are at one pressure and when I check with a tire guage I get a different reading. (TPMS 32, G 36 cold) |

danvillekidd, that is not why nitrogen is used in aircraft tires.
The primary reason Nitrogen is used is because the FAA came out with an Airworthiness Directective (AD) which said that all tires on braked wheels must be serviced with dry nitrogen. This cuts down greatly on the possibility of a brake fire being fed by a tire with normal air. The airlines find it much easier to use nitrogen on all tires instead of specifying braked on non braked tires. The tires used to be serviced with just compressed air until the FAA came out with this directive. nitrogen is an inert gas and will not feed a fire. regular compress air is not an will. compressed air + brake fire = boom. |

While I didn't purchase my SS for the gas mileage, I "try" to be a good girl and milk a few more miles outta every tank.
My first big road trip was to the Fest this past April in GA. Avg speed on I95 was 68 MPH (give or take a little) and I was shocked when we stopped to fill up that I was getting almost 27 MPG... Added bonus.. |

mr. anderson, You are right about the AD, but the reason why airlines use it is not the point. The point is that it does change with temp just like normal air which is already 71% nitrogen, so why pay extra to have nitrogen put in car tires?
