A few in the press are claiming GM "lied" about the Volt because the in some instances the engine can actually provide direct propulsion. So instead of reveling in the technology, as most of the reviewers are doing, a few misguided folks are trying to reinterpret what GM meant when and what it said then to put them down.

What's the deal to all that? Although a technicality, a mechanical (albeit temporary) link no longer qualifies as an EV...right? I don't understand what the big 'uprising' is about...get over it. But it's *technically* true.
EDIT: Nevermind. I just read through the thread. How disappointing. You add a feature to the car to enhance its abilities and suddenly you're deceiving the customer. Whaaaa?!

This all started from an Edmunds article, and some are speculating that it's purely revenge for GM refusing them access to a Volt for a test drive. If I recall correctly, MotorTrend released their own review the same day as the Edmunds article and mentioned the ICE-drive wheel link in their article, but didn't bash it or GM. Of course, the next site on the bandwagon was Jalopnik, and that site is pretty much the epitome of bad journalism since they can't keep their opinions to themselves when reporting on things. Plus, the author of the original Edmunds article is apparently the brother of a Nissan employee. Guess what Nissan builds...the Volt's half-assed competitor, the Leaf.

I was on a panel with Scott Settlemire and Cheryl Pilcher at the Anahiem Convention Center last weekend. The first thing they said was they had no comment on the vehicle that doesn't exist. They would take no questions on the vehicle that doesn't exist. IMHO they were way to happy while they were not confirming the vehicle that doesn't exist. Maybe it was just the California weather making them smile or it could have been they just finished talking to me
![]() If they do decide to build the vehicle that doesn't exist I have gone on record asking for a CTS-V style steering wheel, Alcantara inserts to add grip to the seats and a CTS-V style differential cooler. Brake ducts or a provision for brake ducts would be awesome. If they can do it without breaking the budget a titanium exhaust with Vette style loud button would put it over the top. A heat extractor hood is essential. Throwing a 'spare' blower pulley in the glove box would save me the trouble of getting one Too bad they said there was no such vehicle to dream about. |

No, there is no mechanical linkage. Basically the ICE generates electricity directly to the electric motors rather than routing it through the battery.
