I can't speak for D setting since i never put the car in that at all.
I can speak for M though.... M will always ALWAYS start you off in 1st gear.
If you go to the paddle shifters... well you can do whatever you want but from a stop then go in paddles.. it will start you from 2nd gear.

Mistake this not guys, PQ & Supercharged SS are 100% correct about starting in 1st gear.
Don't believe me/us ? Go stop your car in M and slowly accel all the way to about 55-60mph and count the # of shifts. (it'll be 5 for those wondering) Thus meaning 1st gear is the first gear. wait... what did I say? 1st gear is 1st gear? Oh yeah.. the car has a "1st gear"

lol...

From a dead stop start
D (Drive) - starts you out in 1st gear everytime.
M (Sport) - starts you out in 1st gear everytime.
M (Manual/Tapshift) - starts you out in 2nd gear - must tap down to 1st.

One of the issues with D (Drive) is a rolling start. If you roll off the line gently, the transmission jumps up to 2nd gear. If you're going slow enough (less than 10 mph or so), you can slam the accelerator to the floor and get the transmission to drop you back to 1st. If you're going faster than 10-15mph or so when you go wide open throttle, you're stuck in 2nd gear.

But if go full throttle from a dead stop, you will always start in 1st gear.

not trying to argue the fact, but when your in sport mode how are you
in first? if you decide to tap shift and left click, you can physically feel
the car shift into first...so it actually was never in first to begin with no?
that's not to say you can't force a downshift on launch by punching it.

i'll admit i've never tried sport mode w/comp on so that may be where
i'm mistaken.

Don't confuse tap shifting M (manual mode) with D (Drive) or S (Sport).

Its a 100% fact that you always start from 1st gear in D (Drive) and S (Sport) when going full throttle from a dead stop.
When you go full throttle from a dead stop, the computer puts the car in 1st gear.

Hold the button down for 7+ seconds. It turns off Traction Control and Stabilitrac.

Easy enough. Same deal on my TBSS. Just had to hold the button on the shifter down for about the same. Figured as much.

What were you disagreeing with? I agree that the best times come from having everything turned off. I was simply explaining the way "competitive mode" was explained to me. I was told that leaves T/C on and turns stabilitrak off, which is bad, bad at the dragstrip because T/C will slightly apply the brakes to stop you from spinning. I tried "competitive mode" one time just for kicks and I was a good 2/10ths slower, so I don't do that anymore.

I just use D (Drive) with the TC off. I've consistantly run fast times that way.
12.9 @ 109 mph (tune only) and 12.5 @ 111 mph (intake, exhaust, tune).

Competitive Mode question and L99 Launch Control Feature?

It would be good to clear this part up...I've heard just the opposite...that putting the car in Competitive Mode turns off traction control, but leaves Stabilitrak on. This makes more sense to me, as it is designed to help you in a "Competition." I assume the "Competition they had in mind was the 1320 track.

I've also heard that Competitive Mode reduces both Traction Control and Stabilitrak, but does not completely eliminate either. Not sure what to believe about this feature anymore.

One other interesting point...one of the posts above asked if there is a similar feature to the LS3 Launch Control for the L99 (where holding in the clutch and pushing the gas quickly down to WOT results in holding the RPMs at 4200-4500 RPM until dumping the clutch).

Here is my experience...

I actually doubted that the L99 had a similar feature. it does not seem to be documented anywhere, but I experimented with this the last time I went to the track...I found that, in when in Competitive Mode (two quick taps of the button), if I hold the brakes with my left foot and press the gas to the floor, the RPMs will rise to about 1500 and hold (I cannot get them to go higher...I cannot smoke the tires). When I release the brake and accelerate, I get a decent launch with 60' times in the 2.1 to 2.09 range. On the other hand, if I am not in Competitive Mode, when I hold the brake with my left foot and step on the gas, I can't get it all the way to the floor without the tires trying to spin out and smoke.

I'd love for others to test this same sequence and let us know what you find...for now, I'm calling it: The L99 Launch Control Feature!

Cheers...

I've always understood competitive mode as it turns off traction control and limits stabilitrac (leaves stabilitrac on but at a reduced rate).
So you can smoke the tires in competitive mode, but if you start to get sideways, the computer will help you out a bit.

But I don't use competitive mode so I can't say this for a fact.

This appears to be true, tried it out today
Competitive Mode (2 taps) - Would hold rpm at 1,500 in D, S, M1
All other modes the car wanted to push/roll forward and or tires start to slip.
