I mean, stripes on the hood, or how about ground effects. I think ground effects look dumb as hell but some guys like them. I like my wheels, some guys think they are dumb as hell. We are all different but to dislike something simiply because of how it came about is kinda ridiculous.

But that's just me I guess.

Was there a specific generation or year that had one that I am not remembering (I have owned 5 Camaros and don’t remember any of them having mail slots)? As far as I know it is not functional on the current Camaro. Is it just a design affect or did it come from somewhere? Like I said, this may be a stupid question (I am good for a couple of those a day) but I have never understood where it came from. Just something I have thought about from time to time. Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge on this? Thanks.
See what you`ve done ColorBlind, now they are debating (or arguing) the functionality of a styling que that was only done to distinguish one model from another.
How about the cowl induction hood? It doesn`t induct anything, gills... just stamped metal then add black-outs to appear fuctional, rear spoiler... might have some benefit if your going fast enough, rear diffuser... nope, no effect either.

But to answer your original question, "Is it just a design affect or did it come from somewhere?" I think it was something they did to distinguish the SS from the V6 models and they probably thought it looked right on the SS.

The big hips have the indentations to simulate scoops. But they ARE functional for at least one person. It gives something for SSOOCH to get a good grip with when he's in his garage...alone.

Yes. I went there.

I removed the plastic insert and cut out the mail slot completely to open it up. It allows a little more air flow although not much and looks actually functionable. I get very, very little dust in through the mail slot.

I think the most hideous were the non-functional air scoops on the 4th gen cars.

Way back on the teaser site for the 2010 camaro at chevy, there was a video that explained that the mailslot was going to be on the 1st gen, but they couldn't get it to work(plastics make it possible?). Can't find anything to prove it though. Think maybe it was just Chevy trying to justify putting it on. Would be interesting if the 2010 got something that the '67 should've had, but didn't.

While the 4th gens weren't functional(except for the later model SS, which was actually SLP's hood), its not that hard to see they were inspired by the 3rd gen Z28's scoops - which were functional...and ruined my dad's motor when it tried to compress some rainwater that got into it. That might be a good reason why they made the 4th gen's cosmetic.

Saw many an 82 on the racks at the dealership because of that. The seals would leak water in, and I guess they didn't have a way to get water out. But the scoops were ONLY functional on the "Cross-Fire Injection" optioned cars. Carbureted 305 Z28s got fake scoops.

As a current and 25 year postal worker, I represent that remark. Be on the lookout for a suspicious looking box in your mail.

if i am not mistaken. the window was GMs way to not use a cowl hood. the s/c was too close to the stock hood, so instead of making it thinner they installed a window. they didnt want to change the shape of the hood.
