Agreed......hell, when I started driving 26 years you could have just referred to it as "natural selection".

The first thing I taught my 17 year old son out driving
is to try and absorb as much knowledge that I had acquired over 30 plus years of driving. You need to know the car your driving and the conditions of the roads your driving on. If you can reach the point of being instinctive rather then having to think out the best course of action this could possible make all the difference. I have had few cases of being on the highway where if I had not reacted to a situation instantly it would have been pretty ugly. Always keep am eye out for your surroundings ESP on the highway and an open lane to enter if needed in a split second. On Ice or wet surfaces always slow down and respect the road conditions, if car starts to lose control don't panic, take your foot off the gas, don't counter over steer, and depending on the road conditions breaking could be even counter productive. I'll never foreget driving once in a full size cargo van I'm my way to a trade show. Fortunatly this was on an early Sunday mourning and there was no traffic. My van was hitting a sharp left turn in the road and I hit some black ice about half way through the turn. Luckily I was only driving around 30 miles an hour because my van started to do a 360 due to the turn. My instincts just took over my foot came off the gas, did not break and held both hands firmly on that steering wheel and road out the spins till the van came to a stop. There was a hill going down to a housing development, and if I had continued apply gas to the car to fight that 360 I shutter to think what of happened. Sorry for the long post but you kinda hit a nerve when I read your story, and thank you for posting it in the first place. I'm glad to hear you and the other drivers were not injured. Cars can be repaired and replaced easier then lives. Take care! |

Years ago i had a 92 Nissan Sentra SE-R and it was a really cold winter day. Some people in front of me were going really slow so i put it in 3rd i think and as i went to pass i figured out why. The roads had tons of black ice on it. When i gunned in the rear of my car went left so i was almost pointing at the other car and this was in a FWD car lol. I was able to correct it and pass them and then i went a safer speed lol.
Also watching that mustang vid is really funny because almost every time i get onto the main road from my house i always floor it a bit and the back end slides out very predictably and is super easy to control. Only time i havent really like it was when i was on a on ramp while wet and merging into traffic. I punched it a bit and then the TC and Stabilitrack came on and i really dont think it helped me. I didnt wreck or come very close but i didnt like how it applied the brakes in a way i wasnt used to. |

Glad to see you made it home safely, it's very easily to lose control of a car if you're not prepared for it.
This is always my favorite video though... http://www.youtube.com/embed/UQXobiLw8wo

My car did not survive 17 years ago. I am sure it would have had I had these wonderful controls. Me and my buddy were fine however. It was a rainy day and lost it fishtailing. I didn't have much experience being 17 at the time.
Sorry if you already saw this pic in a different post.

ive been told by some that counter steering and letting off completely is how you save it, whereas some say if you counter steer and let off the gas it causes the tires to hook back up after spinning and it will unsettle the back end and cause it to swing again, so staying in the gas a little, not flooring it of course, will get the car back in check . not really sure which is which. havent done enough sliding control to know which is better but i let off completely in the ta and it unsettled the car after kicking it around the corner and it made me do a 180?

+1
I've had plenty of experience driving manual transmission cars, and plenty of experience driving rear wheel drive cars, and this is the first one I've had with any type of stabilitrac or anything. I've gotten used to cutting it loose in other cars that I've driven, and I feel like I can handle skids without much trouble. For me, my experience I described in my post above was because that was the first time I'd ever turned stabilitrac off in my SS. I was used to it's handling WITH stabilitrac, and used to handling rear wheel drive cars in the past, so I figured no big deal. I wasn't prepared for what the car could really do, because that was the first time I'd driven it with the training wheels off, so to speak. I guess my point is, in vehicles I've driven without stabilitrac, I've been fine and can handle them no problem. Since my SS has been driven by me with stabilitrac on, pretty much all the time, I think it took away the experience of learning the car's true handling. You get used to driving the car for months with the system ON, and think you can handle it no problem, and then turn the system off, and it's like a whole new animal. I don't think it would have given me any trouble if the system was off by default and I never turned it on, and had driven my car from day one without the training wheels. I hate that we have to baby-proof everything these days, and I think stuff like that leads to worse, not better, drivers. |
