What Kind of Engine Oil to Use

(V8 Engines) 2010

Look for three things:

. GM4718M

This vehicle's engine requires a

special oil meeting GM Standard

GM4718M. Oils meeting this

standard may be identified as

synthetic. However, not all
synthetic oils will meet this GM
standard. Use only an oil that
meets GM Standard GM4718M.

. SAE 5W-30

SAE 5W-30 is best for the

vehicle. These numbers on

an oil container show its

viscosity, or thickness. Do not

use other viscosity oils such

as SAE 20W-50

This vehicle's engine was filled at

the factory with a Mobil 1 ® synthetic

oil meeting all requirements for this vehicle.

Oil Flushes

Do not add anything to the oil.

The recommended oils with the

starburst symbol that meet GM

standards are all that is needed
for good performance and engine
protection.
Engine oil system flushes are not
recommended and could cause
engine damage not covered by the

vehicle warranty.

2011--2012

I checked the OWNERS MANUAL for both years and all it said was:

V6 - V8

ACDelco dexos1 Synthetic Blend is recommended
This vehicle was filled at the factory with dexos

approved engine oil.

Also for Oil Changes

Dexos and GF-5 oils allow drivers to drive more miles between oil changes without needing to worry about a loss of lubrication qualities, the buildup of sludge, or damage to sensitive emission control devices. Depending on driving habits, oil changes could extend beyond 10,000 miles.

While that may be heresy compared to the 3,000-mile oil change interval your local shop recommends, it’s the new reality of oil change intervals. Thanks to the use of in-vehicle oil life monitoring and these new oil formulations, there’s no longer one specific mileage interval to adhere to. In other words, changing your oil every 3,000 miles will likely lead to wasting oil by replacing it before it is actually necessary.
Further, GM says that if a customer has an engine failure that is traced to oil or lubrication issues, and if the customer does not use dexos 1 oil in their gasoline-powered GM vehicle, that act alone could void the warranty. The same goes for GM vehicles with diesel engines, which use a diesel-specific “dexos 2” oil blend

Good to know, thanks! Although I HIGHLY suggest if you have a 2010 & 2011 (1st have year build) V6only not to follow the OLM. The OLM has been updated as of mid 2011" and cars that have been flashed (like mine) to calculate much move conservatively, I’m guessing because of the know timing chain issues with the LLT issues.

I used Mobile 1 since my first oil change & never looked back. That also includes using Super for fuel since Day 1 when I picked it up from the Dealer Apr. 2009.( But thats another debate)

And following that advice is a sure recipe for timing chain issues down the road. I dont think it is the mechanics that lie outright, they are told by the service writer and service mngr IMHO.....either way, with as much useful info in the owners manual there sure are some bad advice!

I prefer Amsoil over RP but I think RP is OK now days....back 15 years ago we had to run RP in our class and could not keep bearings in the motors ($25k motors) unless we changed every run.....but I'm sure they have improved it substantially as I dont see the build shops with the disclaimer anymore (we would NOT warranty our race motors if RP was used back then...and many others would not either. Same with Fram filters. We had seen to many collapse and choke off the oil flow) so ANY good full syn is good IMHO and the Amsoils, Valvolines, Redline, etc. are top shelf.
