Hey Tag, the '70 Chevelle is definitely my favorite, but I have that syndrome where I always want another car, so I have many #2's on my list. As for sending it off to a new home, I'll keep you in mind. With the prices of "collector cars" being what they are today, I couldn't buy this car again if I wanted to because it is a legit SS and numbers-matching. It's sad, really. It's also actually a triple-white car (incorrect black interior currently) that took me years to find (you wouldn't think so, but they're actually rare). So the other part that stinks is the fear of driving it too much and getting into an accident because I don't know that I could replace it. :(

SSmoked -- no, I have the hydraulic lifter LS5 motor, conservatively rated at 360HP. A little easier to deal with than a solid lifter LS6. Also means I have air conditioning, which you couldn't get with the LS6. Cars like mine don't get the big money that LS6 cars do, but they are typically worth more than the SS396 cars. There were actually fewer LS5's assembled than LS6's (4,298 vs. 4,475). Of course, based on the law of averages, there are about 20,000 SS454s out on the street -- just that most are clones.

My Dad had three 69s not all at the same time. One of which he had until I was 5 and remember riding in.
The plate that's on his old truck (my project truck now) that has a picture of the one I remember riding in...

Well lets see........Mom had a 70 396SS, which I was born in....Couldn't get to the hospital in time.....Then brought home in.......That car came from Roger Penske (sp) dealership in detriot, MI I believe. Mom bought it in 71 and had it until 74. Sold it because couldn't afford the gas in it and we moved. Then in 77 she bought a type LT(which I still own) Dad has had 2 firebirds one 83 looked just like knight rider and an 86. Both were wrecked and lost.
My first was the 77 type LT. Then an 83 Z28. The first one I bought new was a 30th Z28 which is sitting in the garage next to my 35th the Z7D and of course the 83 Z28. Got to love GM.......... |

My Grandpa is a GM Retiree and had some wicked cars including a 428 tri-power Grand Prix that my dad got his first ticket in. My Dad started out with a 66 Biscayne and upgraded to a 67 Impala SS. He got "our" first Camaro, a 1981 6 cylinder in White with Red interior when I was 6. He picked up a 94 Z-28 with T-Tops and red on black tweed interior when I was 19. I picked up an '89 IROC in black with Red interior and a 305 TPI. It wasn't the fastest, but man did it handle! Then I got a '96 V6 Camaro and stomped my friend (who had an '86 mustang GT) in races all the time. I wrecked my '96 and got lucky enough to get a '99 Z28 in black with grey interior and 6 speed. I dumped a ton of money into it and then I got married and had to trade it on something more practical that my (now ex-) wife could drive. I wish I could do it all again, because I would have kept them all and not married her... hehe. Now I have my '07 Trailblazer SS and soon will have a 2010 Camaro SS (or Z28... whichever is the INSANE one). I'm frickin' excited!

I remember clear as day the day my dad bought his 79 Camaro Berlinetta . At the time I was 13 (1989)
It was a cold and clear sunday afternoon in February. I was on the couch watching my first Daytona 500. (Dont laugh here in canada NASCAR was hard to come by in the earl(ier) days. Above the sound of the tv I heard my dad coming down the street. You know that hollow sound that comes from the old school two barrel 305's. He pulls in the driveway (at this moment he is only test driving it). He comes in and tells my mother and me about how it is a good deal as we needed a car (at the time he payed $2100 with only about 100K kms on it) without having to do anything to pass safety inspection. It was stock from bumper to bumper (including the factory mono radio) We go for a drive, and next thing I know we are at the owners house and dad is writing a cheque. ![]() On the drive home I remember thinking that I really could not wait to turn 16 and get my license so that I could drive it. The sad thing is that I only got to drive it a couple of times. Because when I turned 16 my dad would not let me be put on his insurance as an occasional driver. He thought the car would be too powerful for me. He unfortunatly had to sell it when I was 17. |
