Sure. The last two cars I have had ('93 Z/28 and '01 WS6) were driven hard (nitrous development at the drag strip and the joy of living and driving in the north GA mountains). Both got to the 200K miles point with that use, and neither had any engine issues.....nothing. Neither car had anything added to then (except for a nitrous kit during development of the kit for that engine), and certainly nothing like a catch can. Plus, there are countless pictures supporting both sides of the coin regarding catch cans. Clean intakes both with and without. I am not interested in spending $200 on something that is not of any or much value. Does it catch oil, I bet it does. Does the engine care if it does or not...that is in my opinion the unproven question.
Devices like the catch can go hand in hand with the dyno work we did when the washable air cleaner craze hit back in the 90's. Many pulls never any proof of manufacturer's claims. Just hate to see people spend money when there is no real gain. |

I don't think the engine so much cares about the oil as it does in the reduced octane rating from the oil mist. Longevity wise, I agree that I don't think it makes a difference. Timing wise, it does.

Headers, you're looking at 450-1800. Yeah, the range is a little crazy. I went in the middle with a set of Kooks, but I've seen TSP headers do just fine. There are other good companies out there like, Stainless works, Stainless Power, American Racing, etc. For a good tune with HP tuners, you're looking at around $500. SCT tune may come a little cheaper, albeit not much.
If you ever have a question, feel free to pm me. I answer pm's all the time.

Now exhaust and intake upgrades are apparently unnecessary to maximize gains... This thread is something else...

I think it's a reading comprehension problem more than anything else.

A friend of mine just had his car done at New Era Performance here in Rochester and got decent numbers. He's got a 2013 SS with new heads, cam, and exhaust, He already had the shop's custom OTR intake. Heres the dyno sheet

On my L99 with just headers, CAI, and Tune I Dyno'd over 380/380 to the wheels (a gain of about 60), added cam and heads and now I'm at 466/410 This was a comp custom grind, not the GM cam, and I also have the l99 not ls3 (even with the ls3 conversion, my tranny is still eating more hp on the way to the wheels) OP I would guess you should be pretty close to my numbers all things considered.

Sounds like a reasonable setup since the GM Crate motors use the same specs. Nice thing is he doesn't have to reinvent the wheel for a proven combo, since his combo is a GM crate motor combo.
Good choice and looking forward to you dyno and track times afterwards |
