The cop told him that it was illegal to put your car in neutral while in motion.
My goodness, awful weird. (not the speeding part, the " being in neutral").

Guess, the various LEO's have some interesting interpretations of what would be considered "Having a vehicle under control."

Guess I won't try Hypermileing in those states. LOL.

I guess I am way too old. With the newer hybrids, wouldn't engine shut down be equally as much of a risk.

So you put the car in neutral, you have the engine running, your power steering and brakes, still function, your only change is the elimination of engine braking. I do it a lot in a manual car to reduce RPM's under certain conditions, thereby reducing fuel consumption.

Take I don't do this under all driving situations. I still have full control of my vehicle.

Driving Instructor says..........

You should always brake first when slowing down. Once you put the car in neutral you no longer have the engine to help slow you down and are relying totally on your brakes to stop. This is called coasting. You should never coast further than the length of your vehicle. Brakes 1st, Clutch 2nd. This should eliminate your problem with the c/c. Have a great day!

So I am almost 3 blocks from an upcoming traffic light. No vehicles in front of me, none behind me and I am going 45 mph. I put the car in Neutral, let it coast, taking advantage of the low rolling resistance, watching the cross traffic at the controlled intersection my engine is now turning half the rpm's and using less fuel.

The deal here is that there are situations where it may well be appropriate to coast, save fuel, and still have full control of your vehicle.

It all depends on relative circumstances. Guess this is why I am averaging 21 mpg overall.

So guess I will be going to jail when, I next coast up to a traffic light, or on any kind of grade change.

Sorry, I don't buy into the generalizations posted.

Regardless, Russ, seems like you may have a minor calibration issue. My cruise control, cuts off when I barely touch the pedal. You may need to have it checked.

Back on point...
When depressing the clutch pedal, there's more than likely a trigger or button that makes contact with the pedal on the way down. This "trigger" cancels the cruise control feature. If however, you don't press the clutch far enough, you won't make contact with the button (or whatever it is) and cancel the cruise.

So obviously, with the cruise still active, it's just the same as having the accelerator pushed. Depressing the clutch pedal while there's throttle demand will cause the car to instantly rev high as there's no weight (or gravity) restricting the engine's pull.

Uh.. yeah..
Driver error.

While you may believe, and uncorrectly so, that you're safely in control of your automobile while coasting along, even while being extra careful, the underlying problem is your not in control of road hazards, or other drivers, nor their reactions or reactions. Its more unlikely that you be able to make a more appropriate spontanious defensive reaction........

A scenario.............Lets say someone approaches from behind you and rear ends your car. The natural physical reaction on the human body is, that your head be whipped backards, and so, more than likey being rendered momentarily semi-conscious as your automobile is being pushed freely forwards, without the considered benefit of engine braking in your manually equiped automobile. Having the engine stall, in gear, equates to engine breaking and slowing down..............

If nothing else, your automobile would stop quicker, though true, not immediately. Then again you would avoid the knee jerking reaction, to the second thing that happens naturally once your head and body began its forward motions after being whipped backwards, and that be, your uncontroled body parts, arm or hands accidentally knocking the transmission lever back into gear and all awhile your pressing your feet accidentally or otherwise on the accellerator peddle. More often speeding uncontrolably forwards until you crash into lord knows what..............

Flash- thanks for the support. I had a really crappy day yesterday, lots of talk within the company that I work for that several of us may be losing our jobs in October. When I re-read the responses today I could laugh them off, but I ddin't feel that way yesterday obviously. I get so sick of how inconsiderate some of the forum members are when they respond to threads. They al lthink they are expert and they truly believe that you need a whole new skill set to drive a Camaro correctly. Today I just laughed off the stupidity of someone telling me where I am supposed to use my cruise control, or that I need to push the clutch all the way in everytime I shift. Or any of the other half a$$ed comments on how I am supposed to drive my own car.

I'm glad a couple of you got a snicker out of my sarcasm about the "name your car"....
I wasn't sure anyone would get it.

I'm better today and I did get some advice I will use and now use the steering wheel button to disengage the cruise control. Next time I take the car to the dealer I am going to have them adjust the clutch switch because I think that is the problem that it's not adjusted correctly.

Thanks for those that had legitimate advice, to the others...well I don't think it's necessary to tell you what I think of you.

Is that in the owners manual too? I must have missed it.

Every day I read about what people don't like about their Camaro's, or another stupid "what is your cars name" thread. I simply bring up something that I do think is a flaw in the cruise control system.

Sorry I should have posted...what did you name your car? Is it male or female?

OK

I tried it today.
The CC turns off if I so much as TOUCH the clutch pedal.
The only way I can see myself putting it in neutral is if the RPM's are in that "magic" spot where you don't need the clutch. Other than that, it's impossible.

Take it to the dealer, yours should be just like mine. The sensor is probably off.

I hope this is the feedback you wanted.

Uh yeah, that's what I said about 3 posts above yours. That I was going to have the dealer adjust my cruise control disengage switch on my clutch.
