im sorry its nothing really personal to anyone and i hope you find that perfect exhaust with no drone because thats what you want but its fun i guess to disagree with comments on a forum where your never face to face and dont really no the op. i always get a negative remark or two when i post something so why cant i do the same. im really just joking around i want everyone to be happy with there new ride.

Let us know what happens with the new exhaust. I am curious if the resonance goes away or just moves to a different RPM.

JMROD, I feel bad for you that so many people on here are bashing you because they don't know what it's like to drive a car with drone. I had two cars with this problem and I can tell you it makes you want to get rid of the car. For the people that are doing the bashing I would love take you for a ride in a car that has this problem. No human can tell me that they like this sound. So why don't you cut the op some slack.
You guys are telling JMROD that he doesn't know what he's talking about when it is you guy's that don't know what your talking about. |

The frequency doesn't stay the same. Hell it doesn't even stay the same at a given RPM. Resonance is the specific frequency at which a given object experience higher amplitude oscillation. The frequency is almost never dynamic in a solid object (as long as the object remains the same the freq. should remain the same as well). So if it does it at idle AND while under load at, say, 1800RPM, it isn't resonance. Which leads to why I think some people are suggesting you are just not happy with the natural sound of the engine. As someone who just had a muffler delete done yesterday I can say I cruised on the interstate, highway, and around town and never once did I get drone. You WILL hear a humming in your car, period. The louder the exhaust gets, the more you will hear it. If you don't hear that "humming" then it is because your exhaust can't be heard. As for why manufacturers would make "drone free" exhausts, well, that should be pretty obvious. Not everyone wants to hear the exhaust. What you want is a system you can't hear until you want to hear it. And all they are saying is, the only way to do that is diverters. If your friend vette "sounds throaty" when you "open it up" well, so did the OEM mufflers on the Camaro...but you have to give it a boot full to get it to respond. And the reason for that is, plainly, they would rather take too much away than leave too much, because the people who want more sound are almost sure to be modders in the first place, and the people who don't want more sound, well, they aren't likely to be modders. So...it's the safe bet. But I've driven on just about every type of road since having mine done and on the highway and interstate you can barely hear the exhaust. Around town as long as it isn't under load, it's fine. I am actually amazed at how close to the perfect balance of "makes noise when you want it to, but keeps quiet when you don't" it is. And it is a BEAUTIFUL sounding engine. So in short, either the work you had done was done wrong, or you just really don't want to hear your car, put something one that bring it down a few rungs.

btw another reason why a lot of people mistake exhaust sound for drone is the description. Drone will make the entire car seem like a major source of the noise, like the whole car is vibrating in tune.
Well the lower register of the exhaust, which is what you are most apt to hear while cruising, being a low frequency it is almost omni-directional, meaning you can't really tell the direction it comes from, and it is more likely to carry through the vehicle. So to the average person, that sounds an awful lot like the description of drone.

i can relate to both sides of this debate. 1. i have a muffler delete, x pipe etc - i want my car loud. 2. i know what drone is, and yes my car has it.
what the issue is, is this. what is an acceptable amount to deal with. yeah i have it, i dont have any issues with the amount i have. however its possible to have more - which might be the case here - and that would suck. i have heard drone before so loud its uncomfortable. even the other day a girl i am seeing was in my car and asked why its made such a loud hummm (meaning the drone). it was going uphill, 6th gear 1600rpm or so (iirc) with the back seat down. yeah i could hear it too. so i simply downshifted and sped up a bit - drone gone. my buddy has a tundra with a cat back, towin a trailer it hit a resonance that was VERY noticeable. i would simply accelerate through that, but he didnt, he stayed at that speed - it was slightly annoying, but i could handle it no prob. some people are just more sensative to it. like me out in the sun without sunglasses - i cant even open my eyes - it really sucks |

good luck finding the drone free sound, if need be you may want to go back to stock with cut outs... stock would not have the drone and cut outs would be way loud and only when you want it (or can handle it)...

so the level of resonance that happen at a certain maitained rpm can cause discomfort? well i can understand that on some level. however i must be deaf to it. since my muffler delete has no drone at all..at least not at a uncomfortable level for me.

I am having exhaust work done on my L99 soon. I want more of a muscle-car sound but I do not want an annoying drone. What I have decided to go with are Kooks LT headers with high-flow cats and a cat back Borla Touring exhaust. I know some people think the touring exhaust is too quiet, but I think it will help me to not have an annoying drone.
I wanted the headers for the added RWHP and the more throaty growl. I decided to do the cat back exhaust in order to get rid of the huge resonators and mufflers on the stock L99. I have to think those things rob power from the car. Also the touring exhaust is supposed to help dampen the drone. Along with the headers and muffler system, I'm having a tune done at the same time which will eliminate AFM. I am scared that I will introduce a similar intolerable drone that the OP refers to. This whole system with tune is going to cost over $3k installed and I would be VERY bummed if I made my car undriveable due to drone. Am I making a mistake? I hope not. Good luck to the OP with your problem. Once I get my headers and exhaust installed, I'll report back with my observations. |

The level of cluelessness on this forum is comical... or pathetic. I can't decide which. [ILJ's rant] Over the years the Camaro got the reputation for being the vehicle of choice for mullet wearing rednecks. I was pretty much hoping that the new, reborn Camaro would shed that image. But here we have a bunch of people who think cutting the mufflers off of their cars is a cool mod. Read that again... a bunch of Camaro owners think cutting the mufflers off of their car is a cool mod. Pretty pathetic when you see it in black and white, isn't it? Sadly, I guess maybe that reputation is well deserved and will be carried on into Gen 5. [/ILJ's rant] |
