well ive gotten my 78 camaro up to 154 mph.
the sucker weighs a hell of a lot, and has less power than the new camaro.
actually, it has about 100-125 less hp. havent tested my car in a while. dont know the current numbers.

Our beloved 5th gen has got to go faster than 165 mph, atleast.

thats about 190...in the aerodynamic vette. so i'm gonna say without taking a speed limiter into play 175-180?

hmmm... I think you just haven't gotten that fast yet... I'll check your car while we're in route to Indy... I have a feeling you have a soft governor at 160mph and your speedo is off by about 8-10% at that speed
HYPOTHETICALLY speaking, of course......

IF I were to ever have gotten it up to about 160 and it just wouldn't go anymore...no fuel cut off, no nothing other than simply no more umph to go, would there be some sort of limiter??

Again, someone would have to check on the SS to be sure . The Z would probably have been VERY smooth w/ zero room to go faster. You know...

I don't know, the highest speed limit around me is 65. Anyway, my point is this. If GM were to put a limiter at, say 155, like people have been mentioning...what difference does that really make? I want to go really really fast just like the next guy (or gal, as it were), but when...besides at a track...will I ever go that fast? I would actually argue that it's a smarter business move to install a limiter, because they are thinking of peoples' safety. SuperEco, you basically said that if you're spending the money on the SS, then you shouldn't have a limiter...to that I'll bring up the Bugatti Veyron (yes, yes, I know...the Camaro and the Veyron have as much in common as peanut butter and a rock...but listen). The Buggati, when it came out, cost $1.4 Million...IT has a limiter...that's a very simple point. I'm not trying to be smug or mean or anything, I'm just mentioning that. It's about safety...all of it.

We all have friends and family who are driving on the road with us. When people are driving at speed...certain elements of safety are seriously diminished...or they disappear all together. If there are people consistantly driving in excess of 100 MPH (yes, 100)...then I wouldn't want my fiance, my future kids, my friends, etc. driving on those roads with them. No matter how talented a driver you may be...no matter how stable of a car you may have...things can go wrong. I'm sure TAG...as well as other officers, or EMTs, etc. on this board can attest to the dangerous nature of driving at high speeds...or low speeds for that matter.

Sorry, I just felt like too much emphasis was being put on this limiter business. And I think that Scott would agree...safety needs to be at the forefront. Anyway...my lecture is done...sorry bout that

P.S. Just be happy they won't limit your speed to 90 MPH...or will they????

Exactly. I suspect most people here asking about the limiter really have no idea what going an actual 150mph+ on a public road entails.
To those, don't forget speedo error. If it said 150 you were most likely going much less.
Anyway, I agree with you, safety first. There's been far too many stories of young guys getting splattered on the highway in their Dad's 7 series or whatever.

It's the acceleration that is the real buzz.

If you are really interested in top speed, go to a track and take some driving lessons. You might be surprised how much you learn.

The 6.1s are gearing limited because they have a 5-speed auto. Pretty impressive considering the dynamics and weight. If the Camaro were gearing limited, with an extra tall 6th gear it'd never get to it's limiter. The dynamics would get it first.

i wish that the speedo on the SS read 200 like the GTO
The GTO has a 200mph speedo because it was also available in countries where they use metric so it was a carryover cost-cutting measure. It's easy to tell how fast you're going so anyone who says otherwise hasn't seen the GTO.

By the way, the GTO had a better drag coefficient than the Camaro and it's top speed was 176. That's where the car really ran out of steam. I've had mine up to 160 and it had plenty of rpm left.

If the Camaro is able to overcome it's drag, that seems like a very logical guess. The only worrying part is the drag coefficient. It's a little higher than the GTOs. But the car also has more power so who knows.

BMW did the same thing for the M3. A potentially 170-180 mph car, limited to 155.

if you had gotten it up to 160mph, it would have just slowed to a stop at exactly what it thinks is 160mph according to the Vehicle Speed Sensor(s)... it would have felt like hitting an aerodynamic brick wall... and since your speedo is probably off by about 8-12% at that speed, it would have looked like you were going ALOT faster than 160mph on the speedo, which only goes to 155mph in our cars... but if your speed limiter were set to, lets say, 255mph, you'd have been able to watch your tach go up while your speedo was pegged out beyond its 155mph max.

If memory serves, it's .35 for the V6, and .34 for the SS.

for what it's worth, motortrend claims 155 LIMITED for the v6. you're officially in z4 range there I think a 180 isn't unreasonable @ all for the v8
