I remember earlier this year making a thread asking about driving the Camaro in the winter and one member replied how if I were to drive in the winter with it I would surely end up in the snow bank, and bla bla bla... I didn't reply directly to that, but I thought "WTF dude, learn to drive. Don't drive like an ass and you'll get around fine." But I digress... Look, I'm all for making vehicles safer. Safety is big for me. But I feel that the "nannies" have become so intrusive in the act of driving that most drivers are progressively getting worse, not better at actually being able to control their vehicles and react properly in even basic avoidance maneuvers. And just cuz this topic made me think of it, check this out. It gave me a laugh. |

I was going to say the EXACT same thing to stevea's reply. But instead I'll just say "No $hit!"
And I'll also repeat what I said earlier: "Natural Selection".

So after reading some of these posts, I need to ask a few questions.
What is the difference between turning off Traction Control & turning on Performance mode? I have always driven with the default setting on, "nannies on" as I have learned you guys refer to it. When I bought the car, the salesman told me that performance mode meant I did not have to release the gas when driving fast & shifting, which I had never heard about before, & didn`t really think he was correct in telling me that. So what can you guys teach me about the 3 different driving modes. Also, what is this I read about needing to hold the button for 7 seconds? I just cycle through the modes, no need to hold the button, what is that all about? I have a 2012 2SS/RS 6spd Thank you for any help. |

old school chevy rodder

wow you dug up a old post from the dead. Basically the OP was stupid, and never was used to the amount of torque his car spit out when he lost traction and he did not let off of it. With all the nannies off is holding the button down for 7 seconds which does turn off both traction control and stabilitrac. It basically makes your car a old fashion hot rod......what I grew up driving and building. Holding down to just get rid of traction control does just that and may make it easier to burn some rubber but stabilitrac can save your butt and adjust the car to make it brake the wheel thats needed instantly to help you go where you are trying to steer with use of brakes, while traction control uses torque management to deliver less power to the wheel that is slipping, and many times can not even be noticed unless you are looking at the HUD or dash saying traction control engaged.........
Now just turning both traction control and stabilitrac off engages what is known as STABILITRAC PERFORMANCE MODE This is where you are supposed to launch your car from and is also known as launch control.........I believe with it the stabilitrac will come in to bail you out but you can do the launch with the clutch in and the revs up to 4000+ as a preset limit..(or lower rpms as desired), and then let out the clutch and go like a bat outta hell if you get traction.....(also is somewhat hard on a transmission so best left for racing mostly). If you read your manual it can expalin more, good luck. You should watch a clip sometime on stabilitrac its the bomb as it keeps cars from rolling over at high speed when they have to do sudden maneuvers....

Maybe instead of "Performance mode " They should name it " prepare to die mode"

![]() Bottom line no matter what "Mode" you are in: As soon as you feel the ass end start to slide, let up on the gas and SLIGHTLY counter-steer. Keep your vision focused on where you want to steer towards. (most likely, straight ahead on the road you were driving on). Good idea to take a track day class that also does skidpad so you can get some practice.

The best advise I can give any new Camaro driver is to find a wide open parking lot (even better a closed off track!!) and learn what this car feels like when it fish tails (both with nannies on and off). While the goal in your daily driving is to never to get into this situation, It is the only way to learn how to save your ass , should it ever happen by accident.
The first few times I had the tail break out I tended to over correct as well, but after a few tries you will get the hang of it. |
