You said who needs long division when we have calculators? thats exactly what im talking about... you would be surprised at how many brain connections you use by doing math instead of using a calculator...for instance, we dont need to count change anymore as we can just deposit it in an automatic counter. we dont need to remember to feed our fish if we have an automatic feeder and the list is endless... by not doing things that we would have been doing in the past, we use less of our brain

'intelligence' is all about the number of efficient connections you have in your brain. the more you use your brain, the better due to stronger, and more neuron connection... its as simple as that, even for the mundane tasks...

however on the contrary, i will say that technology does make us smarter by providing us with more information than ever before, such as the internet. its up to the individual to actively seek that information instead of just bsing around watching tv or whatnot
Oh, no doubt - and I agree. You'll NEVER hear me advocate for using a calculator unless a student understands how the math works. You just can't skip that step (I'm a teacher...). But after that's been achieved? Do professionals still do long division as a course of action?

I'm also in a Tech Masters program, so I'd like to believe I'm an authority, but I know I'm not...The purpose of technology is to make our lives more convenient and comfortable. Really, that's all it boils down to. Can you imagine rifling through encyclopedias and/or texts for a small research project, anymore? Ugh...that's one thing I won't force kids to do very often...

Now...as applied to cars? I think every driver of every high performance vehicle ought to take a HPDE course with all the nannies OFF...so things like described in the OP don't happen as often. But at the end of the day? Things like launch control and Stabilitrac keep you safe, and consistent. They allow a driver to better focus on the track and the race, instead of trying to detect wheel-slippage 100% of the time, or sense the yaw of the car as it exits a corner.

Technology is not making us stupid....we have a choice to understand what we're doing...or just skip it. So...we're making us stupid. Just my .02.

I will say, I hold that button for 7 seconds EACH AND EVERY TIME I get in the car. Its not that hard to control the car...

RESPECT the car and it will treat you well!
As aggravating as it is, I've held the button down each and every time I've fired mine up too. I'm a creature of habit I guess and just like regulating it the old fashioned way...

Glad you're Ok.

With that said.

Yeah, Traction Control Steals alot of Power. With the Electronic crap turned off it like drive a muscle car before the Electoronic crap was dream up.

With all this Electronic saftey mess, what happens then someone goes from driving a Brand New SUV with Stablity, Traction Control and Anti-Roll stuff to driving an SUV without this stuff because something happened to the new SUV and they can only afford and older one?

They are more likely to wreck in the older SUV because they are use to a Computer correcting their mistakes.

whats an encyclopedia

and yes i agree with your last statement, its unfortunately true that we are making ourselves more and more unintelligent as a species as a whole, not the brilliant scientists who intent new and better technology (such as myself hopefully one day )

For the most part I leave mine on, but do turn them off.

Part of the issue, I think, is that many newer drivers have grown up having these electronic nannies compensate for our mistakes in driving skill. I've been driving RWD cars exclusively all my life and this is the only car I've owned WITH the nanny.

I'm very glad it's there and know it has saved many a crash, BUT sometimes having machines compensate for our own lack of skills is not always the best thing for us. It can build a sense of invincability or lack of attention knowing something else will look after things when we dont.

I think it's a good thing, where safe to do so, to turn them off and experience the car as it is, then you will get a real sense of how aggresivley your driving daily BUT the computer is compensating for you.

Always be safe, know your limits, light em up when safe to do so. We didn't buy a sports car with 425+HP, just to look cool (or atleast I hope you didn't)

no the automatically turn on as soon as you turn the car off.... the ONLY way (at least from my knowledge) to have them off is to turn the car on... then specifically press the button (or hold the button for my bad mistake) ... otherwise its on by default

I almost always have had T/C on when driving on the street.

I don't know why I took it off on a rainy day here in Seattle once, but I was on the 99 Viaduct heading north out of Seattle in the tunnel. It was wet, and I almost lost the rear end at 50 having just touched the throttle a tiny bit to accellerate.

Even if you aren't going WOT, things can happen quick in this car, so if you do have the T/C off, you should ALWAYS be paying attention. If my mind had been wandering when this happened, I probably would have wrecked the car (and other cars). As it was, my rear end moved out about 2-3 degrees before I corrected (and let off the gas).

The expansion joints combined with wet weather are KILLER around here. I can't tell you how many times I've almost lost my shit on bikes and other vehicles merging onto I5 North from 90, I405 S from 90, or I5 South from 520. Also, getting onto the W Seattle Bridge is particularly hazardous from I5 South. They give the vehicle a little "hop" just enough to unsettle the rear end, and some of them have metal strips which are SUPER slick which allow the rear to start sliding. Can't be on it AT ALL when traveling those areas...

This is getting out of hand? Can't anybody drive a freakin car????? It was raining here today and I was driving my truck and as I came to to "T" stop I turned right and stepped on the gas.... OMG the tires spun and the rear end slid. I was so freaked out at the power under my foot...... Not. I let off the gas, turned it straight and drove the truck. It ain't rocket science as the saying goes. Come on drivers, get a grip, it's not that hard. Did you know people drive in the snow and ice without TC???? And they even drive in the rain?????? Some people better stay off the roads and out of the way of people that know how to drive.

Yes, on average there are 58 days of sunshine per year in Seattle, 226 cloudy days, 81 partly cloudy days. Out of the 226 and 81 combined, we get about 155 days of rain, on average, per year.

We do not top the list for rainiest or cloudiest city.
