I agree with this post except for this statement right here.

This held true back in the day, but today, i can guarantee you one of two things, and neither of them are a big block

1. Your SS will either have a 427 small block LS7(HIGHLY DOUBTFUL, because of price and availability)
2. Your SS will have a Supercharged 6.2L that will crank out north of 500 hp.

Either way, you're not gettin a big block. And this is assuming that the SS will be on top, for all we know they could make an SS trim V6 the way Chevy throws that name around these days.

If I recall correctly, Scott already had said (either here or in another forum-think the link was posted somewhere here), that the LS7 would not be an option for the 5th Gen. It's production cost (built by hand) would be too high. So...the LS7 goes for what?...$14K, $15K as a crate motor? But, as you saw in my earlier post about GMMG releasing the LS3 crate engine, it's going to cost half if not less than the LS7 crate engine.

GM won't put the LS7 in a Camaro...unless it's built by GMMG as a special edition. But, I don't even see that happening. I see an LS3 supercharged or even another small cube/high hp engine going into a special edition. Either way, only small blocks going into the 5th Gen....weight issue. Of course, there will be many, many folks who order the V6 and toss in a big cube V8 changing out all the other internals under the hood as well for the track.

The LS7 is a great engine and a while back I was hoping to install one in a 5th gen. But when I think of how much LS7-derived stuff is on the LS3, it makes a lot more sense to start with that. Don't like superchargers? Bore and stroke it. More aggressive cam. You'll reach LS7 numbers for far less money

Guess I wasn't clear. I meant big block availability in the first-generation days. We can all dream of a big block in the moderns, but we can keep dreaming.

I'd agree with you guys that a small block with lotsa extras will be the option -- how SS and/or Z28 gets packaged by modern GM -- that's the real head scratcher.

SS vs. Z28

This topic may have been discussed before, but I wanted others opinions on whether the new camaro's top model should be an SS or a Z28. (somebody may already know this)

In my opinion, it should be a Z28. For years now Chevy has abused and cheaponed the SS logo on cars that dont deserve it. Cobalt SS, what is that? And cars with front wheel drive should not be an SS....ever. Whats next and Aveo SS, a Venture SS, a Suburban SS?

I say make it a Z28 and be done. To my knowledge, the camaro was the only Chevy with a Z28 model (RPO code).

Just one mans two cents.

Could care less about the badge and huge unroadable hp numbers, give me a v8 with 2 doors and conceptish type styling and call it a pinto.. don't care about badges
(then again I'm one that could care less about the history behind the nameplate either..oh the sacrelige)

Now that GM is backing off the use of the SS badge from all it's cars, I'm leaning back to that nameplate for the top model. I won't be dissapointed either way. It's just been known for so long that SS meant top model. Making the Z28 the top model is going to confuse a lot of people. I'll be happy either way. Oh, and I would put money on it that the Z28 is going to be top dawg.

From personal experence I can say that I have no clue! While the Z/28 was truly a powerhouse it gives up alot to the SS in terms of handling. If you wanted a 1/4 mile killer then the Z/28 was the one to have. If you wanted to be able to drive hard and still turn then the SS was the answer. I think we'll still have the same problem SS vs. Z/28 for a long time to come. Save yourself the headaches and get the one YOU want. The aftermarket will be so huge for this car that you can truly make it your own.

I think you're a little confused about what was what back in the day. The Z/28 started life as a production version of the SCCA Trans Am Sedan road racer, it had far superior handling over the SS models. While that evolved and may have changed over the years, Z/28 was the performance handling version while the SS was more oriented to straight line speeds. And I'll take my new Camaro in whatever package has great handling characteristics combined with a fairly high performance drivetrain, whatever they decide to name it (though I would prefer it to be Z/28).

Again, SS will be my hope. Z28 is alright, but the SS of recent years has been stereotyped as the top dawg model.
EDIT: I just wish they'd come out with the trim levels so I can pick my plate.

I would like to see the SS as the strip monster and the Z28 as the road racer. I hope that means that the SS will be considered the top Camaro. That way I can get a Z28, I know what I can comfortably afford and projections make the top camaro a bit difficult. but a mid level V8 I could do.

I think having the Z being the "everyday" power house, and allowing the 'SS' to be the monster, you-don't-wanna-drive-on-the-road-for-fear-of-hitting-somebody-while-idling car, would benifit the 'Z28' name.

but on the other token, making the Z be the afore mentioned powerhouse, could immortalize it.
