Blurring Out License Plates in Videos

I frequently see videos posted where the poster has blurred out license plates for privacy reasons. Is there some good free software for doing this?

I've got to ask - Am I missing something about the need to do this? Everywhere I drive my license plate is visible to anyone who wants it. So I'm not sure just how much more a problem it is that my license plate is visible in a vid or pic.

Is it just a case of being careful or is thereafter real danger here?

I've always kinda laughed when I see plates blurred out. Don't really see the point, like you say, your plate is visible to hundreds a day as you drive around town.
If someone wants to get you ............. they will......

People blur out faces and license plates but pour out their life history on Facebook, go figure!

I have to admit I haven't really figured that out. I had seen it being done and made a poor assumption that there must be a good reason otherwise why would they bother. Guess I was just being a sheep and I'll not worry about it.

Thanks everyone for giving me a dose of common sense.

I think it has something to do with many more people could see it online. It's always better to be safe then sorry.

The only reason that I can see to do it is that on a car forum you use a user name instead of your real name and some folk may want to stay under the radar for whatever reason. Now if you have a modded car that makes it stand out then that would pretty much be a mute point anyway.

It only makes sense if they are doing something illegal in the video. I never really understood it either.

My general rule is that I don't care and I don't hide my own plate in pictures, but out of courtesy I will most always blur the plates of the cars of people I'm associating with. However, the general public (i.e. a car that just happens to be in a photo) won't get blurred. If you're in public, you're in public.

My thoughts are: if there is a reason you need anonymity, such as questionable or potentially problematic activities, then blur the plates. If you photograph a car out on the street, and its not your car, then blur out of courtesy. But if the car is at a car show (intentionally on public display) then I don't blur.

But that's just my thoughts, I haven't seen any formal legal policies about when to blur.
