Maybe a dumb question but....
Do our tires have nitrogen in them instead of air?

Mine came with Nitrogen in them when I picked it up... not sure if it's a dealership thing or a factory thing?
I have 'Nitrogen' printed on my valve caps and a little sticker inside my gas cap as well.

Right, I'm under the impression that mine came with nitrogen as well from the dealership. It came with green valve-stem caps.

I run mine on 78% nitrogen.

I have black stem caps and no sticker where the gas cap is and my dealer never said anything. I have always used air. If they never told me there was nitrogen would I still be ok? How can I find out for sure?

I'm not quite sure. I got a flat a week ago and I had no choice but to put air. That's why I created this thread to find out

Air or nitrogen are both ok. Nitrogen doesn't expand and contract as much as air, so the air pressure doesn't change as much with temp. change as with air.

Air is 78% nitrogen. The so called advantages are far outweighed by the high cost of pure nitrogen. No need for it.

If you want to be more precise, you can use PV=nRT, and use the correct R for nitrogen. Even then, the change in R is only 3%, when applied to nominal 36psig is only 1psi (Air = 53.34, Nitrogen = 54.99), AND THAT'S FOR A BIG CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE! I've glossed over quite a bit here, and if you want more detail, I can provide; I could do a table of pressure changes per degF. Just keep in mind that the race guys will adjust tire pressure by 1/4psi increments, which the average Joe tire pressure gage cannot read; plus, they no doubt run their tires hotter a their speeds. oohhhh! That makes the car lighter! What a great idea! I think I'll start a business that puts a 50/50 blend of helium and nitrogen and charge people $50 a tire!

I dont believe there is any real performance difference between running nitrogen and oxygen in your tires.
Only real difference is nitrogen is more dense and wont leak as fast from the tire as oxygen especially when its sitting still in the colder months |
