Coon-Ass Curb Rash Repair

I was pissed after I rashed my P-side rear rim.. Did not want to fork out $250-$300 for a rim when I may decide to get different rims later... While trying to figure out how to knock the sharp rough damage off it dawned on me they are aluminum... I can sand them! Sanding them turned out better than I thought.. The 1000 Grit is dam near a polished look!

So I went to the local Automotive store and got some 1000g wet/dry Sand paper, GM clear coat and some tape to mask the tire and rest of the rim from over spray...

Wet Sanding time about 3 hours... Have plenty of water ready..

I know I could have used my Dremel and finished in 1/2 the time but the Dremel would have either gouged my tire or left the rim wavy. i am not finished yet, the sanding is done but i need to buff my clear coat on the wheels after I apply some to the area that was sanded.. However, unless I tell you to go looking for the rash, you'll never see it. I will get some better pictures with my Nikon when i am finished.

Keep in mind... My Rim was not bent at all.. Just rashed. The tire took no damages either, not even a scratch... I do not recommend trying this if you bend your rim or damage your tire... You need to replace them.

I apologize for the quality of the pictures. I had my Blackberry on me at the time and was not about to bring out my Nikon with aluminum particulate everywhere.

It's nice to know of a possible fix for the curb-damaged rims for us camaro owners.

What is a coon-ass? I'm not familiar with the term.

Hmmm.. so you sanded about 3/4 of a mm (guess) off of one part of the rim. Don't you need to get the wheel rebalanced, or does it drive with no vibration ?

Thanks for all the compliments...

LOL no. Not trying to sell it.. I know a lot of people get curb rash and start looking to buy a new rim or pay someone to do it....

At $7 for a can or Clear Coat, and $4.50 for sand paper I thought someone could save some money if they had the same thing happen.. A new rim runs over $250 when you add mounting etc...

As far as for re-balancing, I am not sure. I have driven it with no shake or feeling other than normal up to 45 mpg.. Ill get it up to speed tomorrow and see if i need a re-balance... It is a rear wheel and not a front wheel so I may not notice it.

Coon-Asses are people from South Louisiana between Lake Charles, New Orleans and Alexandria.. LOL..

LOL, I was referring more to the fact that you posted this in the for sale section instead of the wheel and tire section in the tech forums.
