Gas mileage suggestions?
Hey folks,
So I've had my Magnaflow 16483 system on for about 13,000 miles now. No complaints in the sound or looks department. I will say that my gas mileage has gone down though from when I first bought the car, at roughly a 5-6 mpg loss. To some folks I know that this isn't a big deal, but I commute to work daily, so this is starting to sting my wallet. I'm wondering if a diablo/predator tune will help my gas mileage. I heard that it will improve my HP, but I am not as concerned with my HP as my mileage at the moment. That said, I'd like to avoid a tune if I can help it. Heck I'd even install another exhaust that has proven MPG numbers. Have any of you folks noticed better MPG after installing an aftermarket exhaust without a tune? Any help is appreciated! Cheers, Heelhook |

It may be that your just getting on the gas a lot more just to hear your new exhaust.
IMO.

Like myold 88 said, you probably got your foot in it a lot cause you like the exhaust sound. Reset your fuel display to 0 while your are in a cruise condition on the open highway. If you read out about 23 to 25 mpg during flat highway driving, your right foot is the root cause of the poor gas mileage.

With as free flowing as the stock exhaust is, switching to an after market will probably not change much of anything, except for sound. Like everyone else said you are probably getting on it more or something else is wrong.

Getting on the pedal cause I want to hear the growl of my exhaust is definitely a valid point. But, I only did this when I go the exhaust initially. When I'm on the freeway I am always on cruise control, so I'm not exactly sure what the deal is.
I have read mixed opinions on whether or not you need some back pressure on the exhaust. I think the size of the magnaflow pipes on the 16483 system are huge. Interestingly enough, if you go on the Magnaflow website, they do not post the HP gain for the 3" to 4" cat back system, only the 2.5" comp series. Think I'm gonna change out my exhaust for the Flowmaster American Thunder. Might just give me the back pressure I need, if I do indeed need it... Heelhook |
