P Zero's... Ok let me hear it...
Folks, this is my DD. Never had a car w/ summer compound tires before. And I live in the northeast! So.... can I assume they're ok in rain? Is the rumor true that under <40 degrees-F they'll slide? Should I just trade them in now for some 20" all season'ers??? Distressed here....

They are fine in the rain. But come winter they are useless. The P zeros are not rated to go below 40 degrees

I live in the PNW. My P-Zeros did fine in most driving situations, rain included. Of course one should always exercise caution on rainy roads. I parked mine from Nov. to March and drove my 4x4 in the winter.

my car drives fine in VERY COLD weather. just drive it "normal" when its cold out side. you should have no problem with the cold. when i say normal i mean nice and easy. if there is any snow on the road, or ice. its game over.

Depends on your driving style. I learned real quick not to get on it with hard excelleration when the road is cold and wet. Since then no problems as I've become aware of how powerful a car this is. I've driven mine on the few days this month that have been sunny and dry. I would never drive it in the snow with the P-Zero's however. Just my 2 cents

I drove mine the last 2 winters up till the white stuff was on the ground. Temps below 40s and into 20s was fine. Just don't pretend your in summer heat. I now have over 30k on stock tires and have not hit the low tread bumps yet. Snow is a different monster. I got caught in a light dusting, not even a 1/8th inch on ground but those P-zeros thought we were in a blizzard. I didn't even make it up my driveway.

Mine is also a DD. Just finished up my second winter using the P-Zero's.
I drive it everyday, year round, unless it's actually snowing. Even when it's 5 degs, I have had no issues, just go easy on the take offs. I have over 20k miles on the original tires, still going strong.

Tire alternative
Driving all winter will be unsafe with those on it. Consider buying a set of the smaller all-season tires and rims from someone who took theirs off and bought custom wheels. Try the forum for sale ads here, craigslist etc. Might be able to find a set for a reasonable price. I saw some on the forum classifides once but that was some time ago, good luck.

Thanks all. This makes me feel SO much better! I've driven it these past two weeks in the AM and it's like 25-30 out - no problems! I definitely knew about the snow and will plan accordingly. But I was worried about the <40 thing. Phew!!!!

I put my P- Zeros back on this past weekend. On Long Island, every morning, this week, has been below 32 degrees. No issues at all. I am using restraint around corners and watching my following distance.
They will come off again around late November/ early December and my Yokohama Prada Spec -X all seasons will go back on.

I made it through the winter this year with my PZ Nero's. Just have to be more careful than you would in the spring/summer or when it's wet out. Made it through numerous negative degree weather with little problems!
Might get some winter tread for next winter though!

MAGfuz, where'd you get those? Tirerack has a VERY LIMITED selection in the RS's 20" size all seasons. I think they had the Pradas tho.

Don't toss a new set of tires based on recommendation of board members from other parts of the country.
Roll with them for a bit and see how they fit your driving style. If you find them slipping in wet conditions or unable to hook-up for whatever reason, then consider a change (tires are expensive, unless you have unlimited resources). Or, maybe consider keeping those for spring/summer only, and buying a set of Blizzaks or something for the winter. |
