splash guard install questions
I just bought some painted IBM splash guards and am preparing to mount them soon. Just a couple of questions for those members who have/had these on their car:
1. Did anyone here who mounted the molded splash guards have to drill into the "body" of the car on the rear ones? From the directions, it almost looks like you would on the rear ones... 2. Did anyone here avoid drilling for either the front of rear guards and not have any problems with them coming loose or not working properly? 3. Has anyone who has taken these off guards off their car noticed any paint scratching and/or paint wear? I'm sure there will be residue from the stick strip... 4. There is a noticeable sharp lip on the inside of (the front I believe) guards (I will post pics later if needed) where it looks like it touches against the car. I can't tell if this is a leading edge of some kind to help guide them on but it looks like the edge stops where the bottom rocker panel starts. Is this normal for these guards? I'm concered about them scratching my paint. 5. Lastly, the rear guards have no flat front piece to them facing the tire like the front ones have and look like they would collect a lot of grit. Has anyone noticed an accummulation of dirt and grim in the "front" of the read splash guards? Thanks !!! Dog Last edited by D Day Dog; 04-06-2011 at 05:33 PM. |

1) No, I didn't drill the small holes for the rear or front guards
2) I only drilled the large hole inside the wheel-well for the fronts. This hole is filled by the plastic plug included with the splash guards. If you have a "Right Angle Drill" you can do this without taking the wheels off. 3) Not planning on taking these off, so I can't answer. 4) I covered the pre-attached molding tape with a couple layers of 3M molding tape (part 03609) to act as a cushion. Instead of touching the fender, the lip misses the body by ~1mm. I'd recommend finding a thicker molding tape to do the job properly; I was in a hurry due to this brutal winter, so I went with what I could find. 5) There is a bit debris of collection, bit nothing a hose can't resolve.

No, I didn't drill the little holes for the front or rear ones. I did drill the large hole inside the wheel-well for the fronts. That hole is filled by the plastic plug that is included with the set. That's as far as I can help with as I don't plan on taking them off. The fit/finish no issues there. And as often as I wash my SS there's never enough buildup to notice.

Yes I did drill the holes in the front and rear. It is a very small hole underneath that you would never see. I was thinking about not drilling but my concern was if there was movement then I could have paint damage or worse if it came off.

http://rpidesigns.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=1917 After painting them in IBM, I think they came out to $277 shipped to me in Alaska. Use the web page to order and you will save 5-10% with the "save" code entered at the time of your order. Our local GM dealership said $65 to install them and I think I'll go with that rather than do them myself. RPI did an awesome job matching my IBM color. I asked them to be initially ordered from GM in black (and they did that) so as to not show a lighter color underneath the paint if the IBM got scratched or dinged up. I need them up here and I think they'll look cool. I would have preferred GFX or nothing at all, but the roads here aren't nice for GFX. Besides, I don't want my paint chipped up anymore than it will (eventually) get.

Did anyone notice the sharp inside lip I was trying to describe in my initial post? Seemed like it belonged there for some reason, but when I held up the splash guard to the car to look at it, this inside lip seemed like it would needlessly press up against the body of the car? Thanks for elaborating and the help people... |

Interesting. I thought of going with the stealth guards, but I don't like the look of simple "mud flaps" which is why I bought the paint-matched splash guards instead. Anyone else able to answer/elaborate on my initial post? Thanks bunches.

D Day Dog the holes that you have to drill in the front are underneath the side shirts and it is painted. The holes you drill for the rear are underneath the rear bumper. Like I said they are small holes in plastic. There is no drilling required in painted metal. I thought about it (Drilling holes) for a long time. I wanted to be sure they were secure and figured GM would have used 2 sided tape if they were confident they would stay on without a screw. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

That said, your parts may not have had molding tape on them because they were custom painted. If that's the case, get some from you local auto parts store. The part number is in my 1st post. It is applied to the surfaces of the splash guards touching the sides of the car (FRONT: behind the sharp edge that touches the fender/rocker panel, REAR: same area as front that touches the painted bumper surface), not inside the wheel wells. As for the sharp lip, I added layers of molding tape behind the lip, so the splash guard doesn't touch the fender/rocker panel. This help at all?
