Fix convertible rub marks.

Here is the main thread about the convertible rub marks some verts are experiencing http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142513 . GM replaced my top but didn't really do anything to fix the issue, they said it's just going to rub. Well I have had enough and refuse to get these embarrassing marks on this brand new top, again. I showed the GM service adviser and shop foreman exactly what was causing the rub marks and how it should be fixed. They said they will pass it on to the GM engineers. I am getting off this merry go round and just fixing it myself before this top gets any worse. I hate that I paid $45k for a brand new car and I have to fix things like this myself, but it is better than having these embarrassing marks, having people joy riding in my car when it is supposed to be getting fixed and end up with scratches on my car.

You will need a T15 and T25 torx screw driver to remove the brackets. I used a grinder to shave down the bracket in question and some stout scissors to cut the head liner anchoring bracket.

You start by putting your top half way up to get the the brackets in question. Use the T15 to take off the two bolts attaching the headliner to the bracket. Use the T25 to take off the three screws holding the actual bracket in. You can then grind down the bracket and trim the headliner anchor to clear where it sticks out too far. Reinstall everything. The bracket has a little bit of play and I first pushed it all the way in to get more clearance but the spring loaded trim panel attached to it was crooked. So I loosened it and pushed it all the way out. That lined it right up.

Be very careful if you are going to attempt this, I accidentally slipped and cut a large slice in my headliner and I had to sew it back up.

You can tell by the rear pics that the passenger side had less clearance and therefore had the worse wear marks.

Did the lotion test on both sides and it passed! I took a knife and my beard trimmers to fix the fresh rub marks, the drivers side you can't see and the passenger I got it to where it isn't noticeable. I've had the top up and down multiple times and the marks haven't come back. It worked!

I don't know if I have mentioned this here, but you can also loosen the brackets and move them in a little bit.

Also, It has been over 6 weeks since I fixed my top and it still looks GREAT! No more rub marks.

Bump for anyone who has gotten their top replaced! Do this and save your new top from the same fate as your last one!

nice post Sux2BU.....I have been reading of all the problems with the roofs getting rub marks so thought even though my 2011 hasn't any that I would do both of your fixes today. After getting into it both fixes have already been done to the car?? was it a maybe a GM recall?
I bought the car last year used from the dealership in Victoria BC with only 1800 Kms on it so seems odd that both fixes were already done. Anyone else find it already performed on their 2011 Verts?
