Can of Marbles Sound

I have a 2011 2SS with 900 miles on it. When I am in either first, second or third and keeping it around 2000 and some change, I notice a sound when I apply the clutch. It sounds like a coffee can with marbles being shaken around. I do not hear the sound if I get the rpm's moving above 3000. I took it to the dealer and they said they tightened the differential mounts and that they no longer heard the noise. I was able to replicate the same noise before getting off the lot. Any idea what this is and if it is normal?

Can you post a video or sound clip?

I noticed that sometimes when you apply the clutch at low rpm's if the drivetrain is under pressure, that you'll get a bit of noise momentarily as all the linkages slack up. If you push it in gently, it gives enough time for the driveline to disperse the sudden disconnect from power. Not quite as tinny as as marbles in a coffee can, but definitely somewhat metallic and unnerving. It's totally normal--my Jeep does it sometimes too. It's all in how you drive them.

Trip to the Dealer??? Useless???

Well, I am scheduled for 8am to see the dealer for the second time on this issue. Am I just wasting my time? If this is normal behavior, I would rather not have them mess with it. I just have never had this issue with any other stick I have driven. For the time being, I will depress the clutch a little slower and see if that changes things.

Great Thread

Hey Gents, check this thread out. Seems to be that many owners are experiencing the same thing. It appears, as mentioned above, to be normal, but there is plenty of insight in this thread.

I also get the same rattle if i push the clutch in at the right time. I have only had it happen a few times. I also agree with 1BadLS3, it happens when the drive train is under pressure. I get the noise if I am accelerating just to enough to move a few feet. For instance when I am moving in a line of cars up to a stop sign, with stop and go movement. I have not noticed any problems from this noise. This may be from pushing in the clutch while still pushing on the gas peddle or without enough time between the motions. I have not experienced it in any other gear than first. If your issue is still different it could be your throw out bearing has issues. Hope you figure out the problem soon.

Report to GM

I think we should all be reporting this issue to GM. I sent them a message tonight. Honestly, they should not be mass producing a vehicle that makes a noise that could make it harder to resell someday. I love my car, but I also expect GM to do their part and engineer the gear box and or clutch assembly so it will not make these sounds.
