Heard a Clunk on the freeway... now this..

I was driving home from work doing ~65-70 MPH when I heard a relatively loud clunk(was able to hear it over my radio and windows being rolled down) under the driver side of my car. Instantly i noticed a different feel in the steering of the car. I also noticed a lot more vibration in the steering wheel and movement in my seat from the body of the car. Being sunday, I cant bring it to a dealership... so I jacked it up and got under it to see if something snapped or broke loose... and I could not find anything. When I drive very slowly in first great.. under 10mph, I can feel an uneven roll one one of the driver side tires. When driving at speeds of 30-65 mph i notice nothing more than increased body vibration. There is no clunking/clicking/grinding/dragging/popping sound of any nature while driving now.

Any thoughts??

Interesting. Did the noise come from the front or rear of the car? Is your suspension stock? The only thing I'd suggest is try to eye the toe/camber of the driver's side wheels and compare it to the passenger side. That could narrow it down to a suspension or steering component and help the dealer with troubleshooting. Sounds like you have a dealer visit in your future.

Is it possible that some of the belts in a tire snapped and one og your tires is about to seperate? I had this happen once on my old Tiburon and it sounded almost exactly like what your describing

See This is why Forums are very useful. I am experiencing the exact same thing, my car vibrates very extreme around 60 mph. I just came from removing and inspecting the front endlinks, front trailing arm, bushings, wheel hub, wheels, tires you name it I looked at it, even looked for leaks from the steering rack. I feel somewhat safe to say it may be either the top drivers side strut gone bad, drivers side front hub, or the steering rack. Also do you have an underdrive pulley, I also wonder if the pulley slowing down the steering pump may have caused a pump failure. Present these possibilities to the dealership and see what happens. Good luck, we both need it.

all suspension is stock.. no mods in there yet.

I heard it come from the front to middle of the car.

I only had time today to get my front driver tire off to inspect... and i saw nothing... tire looked and felt to be all together. I got under the rear end as well and grabbed everything I could reach to see if something was loose or cracked and nothing...

Unfortunately, My car is going to a collision center tomorrow as someone drove into my car while it was parked at a mall last friday. front passenger side .. no note... nothing... i was a bit pissed off. Soo... once this gets taken care of... then its off to the dealership it goes.

Same thing happen to me but I was going 40 in the streets all the sudden my car started shaking badly for a second I thought it was going to break down but it didn't then my engine light came on and every time I tried accelerating it would vibrate harshly and when i release the acceleration it stops and it only slightly does it. I Don't know what was going on so i went to the chevy dealer on saturday and they told me that the can't get to it till monday afternoon so i left it there and now i wait to see what is wrong with it. By the way everything in my car is stock.

Since your vibration has a speed range of 60 to 75 mph, it's highly likely to be caused by the wheel or tire, as this is the speed range for the wheel/suspension mass/spring resonant frequency.

Lost wheel weight, defective tire, damaged rim are all possibilities, but the clunk sure seems to point to a lost weight. Inspect all 4 wheels.

it also happens when going very slowly, under 10mph. The entire body of the car on the driver side feels like its rising then falling and going side to side. There is a lot more motion in the body and seat of the car.

There could be something stuck in your tire. Have someone take a video of you driving slowly and see what the car is doing from the outside.
