Factory Air Inlet Resonators

I came across this info and thought it was interesting;

Air Inlet Resonators
What's up with all the goofy warts and tubes on the inlet duct for the Camaro SS V-8? These are known as Helmholtz resonators, and help the Camaro pass federal drive-by noise standards, and to reduce unwanted resonances in the induction. They have to be different sizes and shapes to target different frequencies at different levels of attenuation. For a given atmospheric pressure, the longer the resonator, the lower the affected frequency. To attenuate a frequency (reduce its loudness) the length will be a multiple of the affected wavelength. Also, the wider the aperture, the greater the attenuation at that frequency. These two photos show three different Helmholtz resonators which target three specific frequencies.

p.s. Just realized should have been in engine forum.

I wondered what the heck but figured it had to do with sound in some way.
Thanks!

that means that the mirror is 38.75% the size of the vertical windshield...
it sure seems like the ratio could be better... just sayin....

That's a great argument for an aftermarket cold air intake.

Yeah, when I saw those on mine, I said "WTF?!" I knew they were for sound deadening, but that's just ridiculous. I said to myself this CAN'T be good for air flow to the engine. 'Definitely going to get an aftermarket intake or CAI, but want to wait and see what other systems come out.

Even the GM Performance air intake has one of these on it.

If you mean against the CAI, Not really, have you ever wondered why the car suddenly reacts to stuff like aftermarket exhaust, CAI, etcetera? Much of the reason many people mod their cars is to do away with the restrictive government regulated items and baffles, so their car will actually go faster and respond to straight into the intake or straight out of the exhaust performance.

With aftermarket CAI's you actally benefit, with better miles per gallon and performance.

The part I highlighted above is the answer to why that is.

Pretty sure he meant argument for not against since he said argument for a CAI
