Exclamation AFM L99

I asked this in a reply but I think this could be it's own thread and maybe even get a real response from a GM guy without the political BS?

Is the AFM really needed? Why or why not? If not, then why can't we have it tuned out at the dealer and not harm warrenty?

I've seen some people state they can't really see a difference in gas mileage when the AFM is turned off. Thoughts?

I'm taking mine to the dealer on Friday to have the engine and trans computers checked for updates (I hear there is a long list of needed updates). I'm going to make sure to ask about the AFM and if GM has made a reflash to remove the AFM (some said they did, so I'm going to check into it) I'll report back Friday evening if it takes that long LOL.

I went into my dealership last week to have them order a new clip for my A pilar trim piece that wont stay attached. They ran my VIN number which is 11,526 and told me there were no updates available for my car. I think it would make sense if the AFM would not activate when the car is in sports mode.

11K? Hmm I'm sure I saw someone with a 20k or higher VIN and they gave him a lot of updates? My VIN is 15xxx something.

If GM used the AFM during the EPA fuel mileage and/or emission tests, it might violate federal law for them to disable it on production cars. I'm speculating, not stating that as a known fact. Plus, the government could see it as GM trying to cheat around the gas-guzzler tax.

I'm sure this is true, but the question I think is why couldn't they still warranty it if the customer had it tuned out by someone else.

gm does not have the ability to turn off afm/dod, yes there are updates for the ecm, mostly just for misfire counter and a/c clutch protection(shuts off the a/c compressor at a different rpm at wot), and generic scan tool data update

yeah GM couldn't do it probably would be considered cheating around the GGTx. They have to prove that the tune (removal of AFM only) is what caused the part or parts to fail. Beyond removing AFM I would say they could prove it, but if you left fueling/spark/airflow/tq mgmt stock they may not. Also would depend on what the warranty claim was on. If it isn't the engine there would be no reason to void the warranty.

Had mine in for the updates last week hoping to help with the herky jerkys. No help there and it appears my gas mileage has taken a drastic drop. Like from 18mpg to 13 (mix of highway and in town). I'm checking it the old fashioned way since everything was reset after the updates. May still be learning too.

Totally forgot to ask about AFM...

Wouldn't you have to change the lifters to disable the DOD?

I got to do some research on this since my brother's 2ss will be in soon!
and Im a believer of "SS" meaning Stock Sucks!! LOL

I don't think so, I think that you would only need to do that if you want to raise the compression and redline up to those of the LS3

Active Fuel Management, Makes the engine fire on 8 or 4 cylinders depending on your RPM speed to save fuel

Load Based system Saves 5-8% in fuel. If tweaked by a good tuner you can gain up to 20% during highway driving.

Would that void a warranty if made the MPG better?
