A little help and advice please

Just wanted to get people's advice on my particular situation. I will shortly have a 2SS/RS.

Like many of us, with winter closing in, I'm looking at different options since the summer tires are a definite no go. Storing the car is not an option as this will be my daily driver. My issue is this...I'm only going to be up in New Hampshire until late January, then I'm off to San Diego for the next 4 or so years. At first I was going to try and make it through these next 3 months on the summer tires since I'm from Wisconsin and know how to drive in snow. However I have since decided, after reading some people's posts on driving in the snow with the stock Pirelli's, not to even attempt that. Safety wise, dedicated winter tires would be the best option, but they are expensive and this will be my last winter in this car for awhile. I was looking at a set of high performance all season truck tires, but the ones I saw only have a speed rating of 106mph (no good if I'm going to start modding the car, take it to the track, etc...). I've already started looking at different width tires to put on the stock wheels. Even looking at tires that will change the overall diameter (obviously I would try to keep the change to a minimum).

So what would you do? Bite the bullet and go for winter tires (the safest route)...and maybe sell them in 6 months, maybe keep them in case I go somewhere cold after San Diego. Look for some all-seasons (even though they don't have any on tirerack that are recommended, and even though they are barely a step down from summer tires for winter driving) which would be the cheapest route, since I would run them til they're done and then put the stock Pirelli's back on. And does anyone have recommendations on a tire if I choose to change it from 245 front and 275 rear. I know the tires have a range of rim widths that they can go on, but the overall diameter is the main concern. Any input would be great.

Woa thats a lot. Not sure what I would do man, in south texas here we dont have snow but maybe once every 2 years and it wont stay on the roads, it will stick to grass but only ice's our roads.

Haha, I know. I've been going back and forth on what to do. Lately I've been leaning towards just getting snow tires and selling them after a few months. Yeah, I'd take a hit, but it would get me through this winter. Starting to wonder if GM picked these tire sizes specifically to make it harder to find tires other then the the two expensive Pirelli's (Pzero and Scorpion) recommended for the car.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. Now...has anyone gone with sizes other then the 245 front and 275 rear? I was looking at the winter Pirelli's, but also the Blizzak LM-60. The only size the Blizzak's don't have to be a recommended fit is the rears. Tirerack has 255/45/20 which is the closest I could find. It looks like the tire would fit on the stock rims and be a little better going through the snow then the 275's, but I don't know how far off the overall diameter they are.

One other thing you should consider when buying snow tires is the width. Wide tires do not handle for crap in the snow and the deeper it is the worse stopping and take off`s are.

Yeah, but with the stock rims it's almost impossible to find anything under a 245 width. Most of the 20" snow tires don't come in the recommended size.

so have you decided on actual snow tires? or are you considering All Seasons?

I got Yokohama Prada Spec -X from Tire Rack. They mention that the back tires may have a little more noise than the Perelli's. I bought wheels as well. I will swap out the Perrelli's based on the weather. The Perilli's will stay on 7 or 8 months a year. I have not yet put on the Yokos. I might put the Yokos on this weekend. The nightime temps have been in the low 40's on Long Island last day or two. The Yoko tires are the exact same size as the Perelli's.

I would suggest you think about buying an old clunker to get you through the bad days until Janauary. This would avoid the problem regarding tires and protect your Camaro from potential accidents in slippery weather. You could pick something up for about the same price you would pay for winter tires. I think that is what I would do if I had your problem.

I think you should buy my truck for 16,000$ and then use that beast to drive in the mud, here is the pic.

I was looking at those too, but the speed rating is pretty low and if I get all seasons I would keep them until they wore out. If I ever take it to the track or decide to dyno it a 106mph top speed rating ain't going to cut it.

This is an option, but I don't think I'll go this route. I paid mucho dinero for this car so I'm gonna drive it dangit!!

I feel your pain, I don't even want to drive mine in the winter, but don't want to spend the money on an old beater just for a few months. I wouldn't worry too much about speed ratings in the winter, especially up here. I don't think you're going to be going much over 70 in the snow, and you know it snows like every day in New hampshire. I think the yoko's would do for a couple of months, I might even go as far as getting some crappy wheels so you don't have to worry about the salt pitting your good ones.

I was being an idiot. The speed rating on the yoko's is V, not R like I thought. Just ordered them Thursday. Gonna use them until there's no tread left. Hopefully, the paint and clear coat will keep the wheels safe. If not, I've got a bag of goodies to clean the car everyday once it's in the garage haha

BTW, you're one-upsmanship is starting to piss me off! Now I'm gonna have to go out and get full suspension installed and maybe some headers. Bitch
