I fixed my scuffed wheel... $1.49...

At around 160,000 miles, most of that done with my hand sitting at 12 o'clock (sorry, Mr. Perkins, driver ed. teacher...), I discovered that I had worn a 'scuff' into the wheel. It wasn't smooth like the rest of the wheel, but had exposed the foam base material in that one spot. I didn't want to wrap the wheel with one of those Yosemite Sam steering wheel covers from WalMart, so I decided to experiment instead.

I wrapped about 15 feet of parachute cord very tightly around the wheel... and I'm pretty happy with the way it looks.

It's hard to guess whether or not this will show dirt. Being yellow, it just might, no matter how OCD I get with the whole hand- washing thing. Also not sure if it'll be possible to clean it, if it does get dirty. If those turn out to be issues, I'll rewrap with black parachute cord.

It's crazy you could wear through that plastic like that.

Hey, if the rope works for you and does NOT interfere with precise or emergency steering, then that's all that matters.

Myself, I would replace the wheel. You can go with the exact same wheel for very cheap. You can upgrade to a higher trim levels wheel very inexpensively too. The SS style leather wrapped wheels can be had for sometimes way less than $100, especially for the 2010/2011 model year wheels. They are very easy to change out too.

I swapped a 2014 ZL1 flat bottom leather wheel into my SS and it was one of my best mods so far. The 2012+ model year wheels are much better ergonomically and can be had for rather cheap as long as you get SS trim or lower. Steering wheel controls will all work without issue.

I really had no idea they were inexpensive... I simply assumed it would be a $500+ item... figured I'd go with the McGyver fix until I felt like shelling out the big bucks!

No not at all just look around on your local Craigslist or offer up I replaced my 2014 base model steering wheel with a commemorative 2015 flat bottom like a zl1 for $120bucks..like said above.. one of the best upgrades to do to the car ..made it so much more comfortable to drive.. you don't even need a steering wheel puller to the steering wheels to pretty simple

I agree. Especially for that engine. That is NOT a knock on the V6s, BTW, just that I know the LLT can be a bit troublesome in certain areas.

Pretty clever idea. How the heck did you wear through the polyurethane wheel though? Got a death grip going on when you're driving it? lol!

No death grip.... I like to think that it's because of the massive resting weight of my astoundingly muscular arms. Hey, this is the INTERNET, so I get to say that!

Plus, I'm a French model...

I have an extra 2013 wheel sitting in my office. It's not a simple swap since the airbag is different, but I'd let it go for practically shipping + $5 if you wanted it. I'm impressed by the mileage and love you've given that car.

I upgraded to the 1LE suede wrapped wheel, so it's practically a brand new steering wheel.

Thank- you, ChibiBlackSheep... that is very generous! However, I have already had Elvis66 (posting on this thread) offer me the same thing; we'll be meeting up soon so I can get his wheel. Apparently, this site is chock full of really decent people!

Yeah, we aren't as bad as the reputation says

Glad you are getting a wheel!

It's a sad state of affairs out there, my friend... the other day, I got into a "convoy" on the freeway: Me, a yellow Challenger, and another yella Camaro... when we parted ways, neither of those drivers even acknowledged anybody else's presence. Ain't no love out there, anymore!
