What are your experiences with a fiber glass hood?

What are your experiences with a fiber glass hood?

1) are there disadvantages?
2) what if there's a scoop - any problems?
3) does it make it more resistant to rock chips?

Thanks!

I had a fiberglass hood on my last vehicle. 06 Dodge Charger. It took some work to get the fitment right since it came in with the corner busted off in shipping. The company wouldnt help at all in getting it shipped back so all I could do was pay to get it fixed. Once I got it all fixed and installed though it was great. They do move a lot when cruising down the interstate so be ready for that. Overall though I would do it again for the right hood.

Sounds like a cheap hood to me. If you have a MPD1 hood it will never move at speed. I have had several customers with our 04 GTO hood who told me it didnt flutter or shake at 140 mph! All our hoods are built this good. Here is a testimonal from one of our customers,

Via email from ROK "ROKS ROCKET" Kellogg one year after he bought his GTO scorpio hood and CAI setup:

"Hi, my name is ROK Kellogg from Middletown CT, it's been over a year since I bought your Hood and Air Box.
I have goten nothing but complements where ever I go, everyone loves the hood, I even received a Trophy,
due mostly to your/my hood and air box set-up. I attached some pictures so you can see how good it still looks.
I have heard horror stories about some of the other after market scooped hoods, like at high speeds their hoods
flex and ripple, bad fitting lines, there is even a new hood that just came out and there are no drain holes in it,
and customers are complaining that there is water caught in-between the hood panels.
I must have sent 20-30 GTO owners over to your web site, and I even had people thanking me for "turning" them
on to your company. I frequent the LS1GTO.COM web site, but I see you are not a sponsor there anymore, but I'm
still telling people about your company every time they ask about my hood. I hope everything is going great for MPD,
and I also want to thank Melissa for her help when I first contacted your company.......Keep up the good work!!!!!"

(From ROK after three years after I sent him an email thanking him for a sale)
"No problem Eric, it's been over 3 years now and the hood and air box are still like brand new. I get complements
on the hood everywhere I go, I'm happy to see others buying your hood for the GTO. It's IS the best after market hood
on the market, hands down!!!!! Again here are some pics so you can see it still looks brand new..." ROK

2) what if there's a scoop - any problems?
Not sure what you mean about problems. Anything specific you are thinking of?
3) does it make it more resistant to rock chips?
Not necessarily. Rock chips result from thin paint from the factory or on a f/g hood from painting over the gelcoat with out giving the gelcoat a good mechanical bond and then priming with a good 2K Primer. The gelcoat is solvent resistant so you will not get a good chemical bond from painting right on the gelcoat.

Yeah it was a Trufiber and I wouldnt recommend them again. My hood had a functional ram-air scoop and it did not cause any problems. As far as rock chips go nothing other than clear 3M is gonna prevent rock chips. You can definitely cut down on them by not driving it on rainy days. Other cars throw up so much debris on rainy days, my car doesnt leave the garage when the roads are wet.

I like to put on three coats of clear, sand it with 800 grit and put on two more. A good film build will resist rock chips far better than a thin clearcoat job.
