Wondering what the latest is on axle back exhaust ? Wanting a better sound and performance but not a drone in my LS3. Something mellow and not loud.

i am probably going to get the borla type-s system axle back. i always liked the sound of borla.

Know that you won't get a performance increase from a axleback system and very little from a catback. The stock system is very good for flow, it's just very quiet. The stock muffler is a straight-thru design so there's no restriction there. If you want performance gains, you'll have to delete the resonators, add a true X-pipe, and get highflow converters. The real gains come from longtube headers.
