L99 TRUNK LEAK

Hello,
My Camaro has a leak on the trunk. Thanks to the folk on here I soon discovered it was the sunroof drain pipe. What a really shitty design!!!

The pipe doesn't stay in very well on its own, so I need to something more permanent.

My three ideas as follows:

Put some heatshrink round it and use the heatgun.
Do you think heatshrink is necessary or I can try direct heat on the two pipes to connect them?!

Tape it up with some electrical tape.

Thanks guys

Not realizing that was where the leak was I bought a trunk gasket. Then discovered the drain. Mine does not stay in place either. I think that a sealant like Selastic like the glue used to glue aquarium glass would work.

Thanks for your quick reply. Trunk gasket! Thats exactly what I was thinking until I looked on the forums here. My friend told me plumbers tape could work.

I used the heat shrink tubing. I thought it was the cleanest installation that would be a reliable fix.

That's what I would do for sure. It's removable and easily reversible.

I have found mine popped off a few times already.

Yeah it's a weird design. I wonder if they did that for maintenance purposes.

A couple of years ago I had major issues with the wiring harness in my driver side door. I pinpointed it to the main ground wire running through the door jamb. It had a lot of water damage and corrosion and the wire had basically corroded to breaking point, which caused resistance issues (window controls stopped working, car couldn't tell when the door was open/closed, door locks activating themselves randomly). The GM tech I was working with explained that it was because of the sunroof drain that also runs through there. It is a very similar situation to the trunk...poor overall design and it is very easy for the drain to clog up or for the line to come loose from its guide seat and drain all over the wires. There is a little plastic seat that the end of the kick panel drains sit in, allowing them to drain in the direction they are designed for. But when I took mine off, the drain tube was just sitting there loose, able to run all over everything. Lame GM...very lame.

Luckily the trunk drain doesn't cause a lot of issues except for a wet trunk, if found early. But the kick panel drains can wreak havoc on the electrical system. I wound up replacing the entire door harness and the door jamb X500 connector/pigtail this past summer because all of the pins were water damaged so badly. It was a nightmare because it is over 20 wires I had to solder, rewrap and reroute. GM got a LOT right on this car, but there are some things they really could have done better. I love the sunroof, but the non-sunroof guys are lucky to not have to ever deal with this.

I certainly agree with you. It is poorly designed. I think I may have a leak somewhere else because its damp above the drain tube. I will fix the drain tube and see if theres anymore dampness

Is this where you're saying there's a drain tube ?

I had good luck with tire patch glue and a small zip tie on each side in the trunk. Just got the little bike tire glue tube.
