Lightbulb K&N Intake and Tune Results

Posting the dyno results of the K&N Typhoon and a tune.
Green obviously being the baseline.

Thanks for the info.

That's a far cry from the advertised 18hp/18tq for the CAI alone.

Did you happen to get the fuel trims off the PCM? How bout knock?

These are the only other charts that I have. Tuner said that the near 90 degree bend along with hotter induction temps in the K&N is what kills it. An over the radiator looks like the way to go, I think the gains from this particular intake is very minimal. Looks good and sounds good, thats about it. Although, it may prove more valuable as more modifications are done to the engine ie. cam and headers.

sorry, not sure how to make these charts smaller.

Even 18hp at the flywheel is a far cry from the posted results. Considering a good tune will net you around 5-10hp, that means his K&N gave 7-12whp.

It's not the 90 degree bend so much as it is the heatsoaked metal intake tube. It's well known that metal intake tubes in a hot engine bay don't go well together. If they would have logged IAT's, it would have shown this.

K&N CAI's suck, other companies have a bigger tube and are plastic.

They make a plastic tube version.

All said and done, I think an over the radiator intake is the only way to go if you want to gain more than just a few horses. An over the radiator goes almost straight into the throttle body and intakes cooler air = horsepower. I can tell you one thing for sure, the K&N is not good for much horsepower because my baseline dyno before the tune (with the K&N) is consistent with stock numbers +/- a couple HP. I had good hopes for the K&N Typhoon but I just simply would not recommend this intake based on my findings.

I cant speak for the plastic ones that have a fully enclosed compartment where the stock airbox used to be. I would be curious to see numbers on one of those.

Would a metal/polished tube with a sealed box have the same results?

If so, I guess the metal/polished tube is more for looks then while the plastic tube would net the bigger gains and prevent higher IATs?

It is a problem with the metal but the plastic version has a huge indented hole where the MAF goes. No one knows why they made it that way but it's got to kill airflow.
