Be Careful Changing Oil in V6!
Okay, I have been a car enthusiast for over 30 years. I am pretty good at taking care of my vehicles on my own.
I changed my oil for the first time today in my V6. I was being ultra careful. I removed the oil cap, removed the engine cover, then replaced the oil cap. Then I unscrewed the oil filter top and took out the old cartridge. Then I put the ramps in front of my tires, got in and cranked her up to pull up on the ramps. That is when I noticed I had not replaced the oil filter cap! Oil flowed over but I was able to cut her off immediately. Luckily, none got on the underside of the hood or anywhere major, mostly just straight down on the pavement. So be warned! Dont be an idiot like me! I was very pleased at the ease of the whole oil changing process. I used Mobil One and a Fram Filter. I love the oil filter placement, as long as I remember to put the darn cap back on next time before cranking! |

You shouldn't put in a new filter, then crank the engine to pull up on ramps before you change the oil. By starting the engine with old oil and new filter, you are contiminating the new filter element with dirty oil.
Change the oil and filter together is the best method. New oil going through a new filter

I did not install the new filter first, just removed the old one and without thinking, cranked the car up to put it on the ramps. Entirely stupid. I think I was actually overthinking the whole situation. Why I didnt pull it up on the ramps first is beyond me.
This is my first car with the replaceable cartridge type filter. No excuse though. Oh well. It is a lesson learned and I will NEVER make that mistake again. |

..gotta crawl under anyway to drain. Habit of draining oil 1rst, then changing filter.
