Changed the differential fluid today, but.....

I bought 1 Qt. of Royal Purple. I set the car on 4 jack stands and got it as level as I could. I opened the top fill hole bolt and expected fluid to come out but none did. Anyway, I opened the bottom hold and let it drain for about 1/2 hour. (Nasty stuff, full of metal shavings). Came back and filled the differential with the whole quart but it never did overflow back out (I expected to be able to know when it was full by it coming out the top hole). I did get 99% of the quart bottle in there. Since it didnt start to overflow out of the top hole, am I a little low on oil now? I wouldnt think so since none came out when I first opened it. I test drove it and all was normal.

Did anyone else use a full quart and still not have any overflow? Please advise. Thanks!

Check your manual for quantity! It should be filled till it overflows. Stop driving till you do that!

Capacity is one quart; you're fine!

Capacity is 1.055 qts. So you may be a little short. You should fill it until it comes out the fill hole.

Stick you're little finger in the fill hole and bend it down. If the oil is just below the threads, you're OK. If its more that 1/8 inch down, add some more.

For peace of mind, I went and bought another quart of Royal Purple and filled it until it came back out. I was surprised at how much more it took. Anyway, I am good now. Thanks for the advise.

same thing happened to me on my fill. I had like a couple drops (literally) come out the top hole when draining. My car wasn't exactly level (pointed down a hair, but pretty close.

I stuck my pinky in the top hole and i could feel the oil JUST below the threads, so it was perfect.

Whats the Royal Purple part number or description? Also, is it listed under the GM approved for use list?

What! No GM additive. They say additive first then the litre of Diff fluid and it should be all good.

You don't need any additive with the Royal Purple, it's already in there.

It should already have the LS additive in it. The transmission fluid is the only one you have to be careful with.

Royal Purple and Redline don't need the friction Modifier...

Mobile1 GL-5 75W90 requires Friction Modifier GM Part No 1052358 2.5 oz.
