Bleeding Brakes

Does anyone know if there are any special tools or anything needed to bleed the brakes on one of these 2010 ss"s???

I removed my brake calipers to paint them orange. when i reinstalled them I just bled them the same as my old 77 chevelle in High School. Loosen bleed port with a 10mm or 11mm box end wrench and have someone help you press on the brake until no more air in the lines. make sure you keep system full while you bleed so you don't get more air in the lines. use dot3 brake fluid I think?? check the cap.

You can also do what is called "gravity bleed".

Make sure you keep the master cylinder full at all times. If it goes dry, then you have to bleed right from the master cylinder. And that can be a pain!

With the master cylinder full and all the bleeders open, just let gravity do it's job. You will actually see air bubbles coming out of the bleed screws when you the fluid starts coming out. Be patient...gravity works wonders. If you don't see fluid coming out, wait. I assure you it will start coming out.

Disadvantage? If you have paint on your calipers, the brake fluid will eat the paint off as it rolls over them.

You also used to be able to get "self bleeding kits" from parts stores. It was a kit that had a hose, or hoses, you could "clamp" onto the bleeder, then run it away from the caliper, or submerge it into a container of brake fluid and slowly work the pedal yourself. I prefer the gravity bleed method, then get a friend to help you with a quick bleed at each wheel to make doubly sure all the air is out.

If you're going to bleed them the conventional way, start with the wheel farthest away from the master cylinder and work your way to the one closest to the master cylinder.

Hope this helps!

If you are looking for a specialty tool , try this: http://www.brakebleeder.com/index.ph...products_id=14.

It pushes the air out the master cylinder instead of out the bleed port onto your freshly painted calipers. However, if you are not going to be doing this all the time, you can save your $169.99 and listen to the above posts.

Good luck!

Do the brembos have 1 bleed port per caliper, or 2?

Do you have to bleed both at the same time? Alternate? Or just chose one to bleed? I was thinking on getting the V-12 bleeder from the link above http://www.brakebleeder.com/index.ph...products_id=14

If you're going to bleed the brakes with a friend, I would gravity bleed them first. (As in a previous post.) Be certain the master cylinder does NOT go dry. Keep it full of fluid. Another tip...when you're gravity bleeding, you will have to leave the lid off the master cylinder.

When the fluid seems to be flowing out of the calipers without any signs of air, close all the bleeders and make sure the master cylinder is full. Put the lid back on the master.

Starting with the R/R wheel (passenger rear) crack the bleeder and have your friend push the brake down slowly and smoothly. Before the fluid stops coming out of the "bleeder screw", tighten it. Do this at least twice. More if there is any signs of air coming out of the screw with the fluid. You have to be sure your friend does not lift his foot off the pedal before you close the screw.

Move to the L/R (driver rear) wheel and repeat. Then to the R/F (passenger front) wheel and repeat. Then the L/F (driver front) wheel will be the last one you will need to do. During all this, do not let the master cylinder go dry.

Also be sure you do not get brake fluid on the paint because if it sits on the paint too long, you will need to repaint. It will eat the paint off the car or any painted surface.

If you're really uncertain about doing this and you have someone you know with good automotive experience, as him/her to come over and give you a hand.

Hope this helps! :-)

+1 for gravity bleed, seems to work the best over the forced fluid methods for me.

Though in a pinch speed bleeders are nice but I never leave them installed.
Had one leak before. it BLOWS

Put some fish tank hose over the nipple to gravity, no lost paint.

Do the 2SS model's have hydraulic clutches? I think this is a pretty good demonstration on how to use the V-12 DIY kit.

Perfect explanation! But heres my question, since the brembos have two bleeder per caliper, how does that work? Do we just choose one? Open both at the same time? Little confused on that part..Thanks

Star with the inner first, then the outer on each caliper as you go around the car. just did mine last week. Worked out great 1st shot. I have a thread going around about my powdercoated calipers. Check it out.
