Could You live on 750-800k Seriously

My best college buddy is in a dire quandry.

Trually unable to work, gets a pittance disability check 1k per month and 100 bucks in food stamps.

He was taking care of an elderely man,, that has gotton so bad he's gonna need round the clock care/ nursing home. the dementia got him.

Bill is the caregiver. and he had sacked away about 300k in liquid bank monies+ another 300k in fixed annuities. He also ownes a small house
worth maybe 150- 200k max.

yes he does drive a sports car ....his only outlet, a turbo 350Z.

He came to me and told me of his delema. He said "AC i think i'm gonna take the money out and enjoy whatever time it buys and when its over
i will off myself "medically inclined i know he knows how.

i tell him no/ no way....but i've seen him suffer for that 5 years with no time for himself. b4 he was disabled he was a monster at 255 5'10
Now he is 168. No family, no wife or kids. and he is closing in on 50

He told me all he did was work and even after he got severly injured + some severe heart trouble. he could only get work as a caregiver. And he is good genuinely! Honest pays the old mans bills takes him to his bank.
meds, nutrition. you name it. just no real heavy stuff..he gets 3-4 hours a night of sleep. He is miserable yet he has money.

i said you keep you r house, buy a car if it makes you happy one good badass car. And see how it goes.

His reply is i feel spent. I want to take 150k out buy a car like ones you have and have a good time. what is the point....so i can live long enough to lose my mind like this old man. ( oh the old man did want to leave him something, but family has diverted that money to a trust that helps the old man till his death.. and it is expensive to die in America)

i feel like really telling him.....do it ! should buy you 5 Years minimum
and smile for a change. he has this glazed look of a man broken...when in fact he is almost a millionaire. Fact is my accountant is his accountant and has closer to 900- 950 in net assets, as i had too tell someone.

No i won't call for metal health ....what so they can put him in an institution, no way. This man deserves better. he love the brotherhood of sport cars, will not marry. he has kinda let himself go...i see changes in him weekly and they aren't good.

i had to ask here. everyone is so busy that can't take a self sufficent man with almost a cool mil. into ther homes....his family sucks all well to do and all with no time.....to give him a room. thats all he'd need.

Seriously what would you tell him, cause he told me last night ,firstthing tommorow i'm gonna cash out 150 to 200k and buy some hell raiser Zr1

and start not paying my creditors, enjoy my life for once.
he means it. i fear when it runs out, he will not have suicide gene and be even ore miserable than now.

any comments please be serious. and he isn't that smart. tech wise.
but he is damn smart about the body, vitamins, meds and keeping deadlines. He kept this man clean and relatively healthy, however the mind is something there is no control over. when dementia hits its like a atom Bomb...it take down everything around it.

thanks for reading.

Now i gotta take off work and intercpt him b4 he goes to the bank.

i told him a cool Maggie SS will cost you like 40k don't blow your living money on a car.......but he is adamant about he feels he hs not much time.

fricking Obama and the interest rates, and cuts to disability.

Man. Gonna have to mull that one over. I've had my encounters with mentally unstable people close to me, and it's hard.

But I've also always had money struggles- but no shortage of supportive family/friends in my life. On one hand, I envy your friend's position, on the other I feel for him. It sounds to me like a compromise may be in order. With that kind of money, he can definitely splurge a little without nosediving it all into the ground. Encourage him to find a middle ground, and maybe a vacation. A little travel might do him good?

Best of luck to him, hope he can pull himself out of the mire.

Well, as his friend, this weight falls upon your shoulders unfortunatly.. You can recommend therapy or a therapist to him, but that would most likely only make him angry and specifically angry with you. I'd say if he has that much in asset, and being about 50 with no real family, the man needs to live life a little bit. Get out and explore the world. If you can afford time off from work, and can afford to pay into the kitty, i'd say take him somewhere, a vacation of sorts. Have him make a list of places he's always wanted to visit, but never had the time, and do it! Really seems to me, he needs to experience some fun, little adventure, and recharge for a little bit.. As for the car idea? it's only going to be a bandaid, but if it helps, tell him to go for it. Enjoy some of that money he's saved, but don't squander it all.

My grandmother worked her whole life, saved and saved........ she retired at the age of 65, by the age of 68 she had full blown dimentia, and we had the horrible responsibility of placing her into a full time care facility as we could no longer do it.... She had alot of assets, but never got to enjoy any of the fruits of her labors.... Always broke my heart knowing that...

Tell your friend that if he exercises his mind (chess or whatever) he won't get dementia. He just sounds depressed because of his situation and caring for the elderly man in a bad state just strengthens his argument that living until old age is a bad idea.

My dads parents are both almost 80, and both of them walk 3 miles a day and read a lot. Neither has any mental or physical health issues that are debilitating. My grandfather is starting to get arthritis, but that's a small matter.

The point is, not everyone will end up like the guy your friend is taking care of, and your friend will likely regret this.

Please explain these cuts to disability. I would like to know the details.

You're complaining about historically low interest rates, seriously?

SSI (disability) got no raises this year, but also did not get any cuts that I'm aware of either.

sounds to me like your friend has some depression issues. You owe it to yourself and him to see if you can get him a psych evaluation and some possible medication to try and balance his issues. I feel that if you help him with his wishes, you will only be enabling him and when the money is gone, he will still be depressed. Fix the depression now and allow him to make a clear decision when he feels better. Just my 2 cents

Your friend needs more help then you or he can get on here. He needs help from a professional and/or his spiritual advisor.

Honestly? take a vacation with him to a poor country and show him how good he has it in America. He'll come back and realize that life isn't so bad afterall.

You seriously came to the Camaro forum (or any other car forum) for life altering advice regarding your friend? I think you need to determine who is really qualified to answer your questions and seek your advice there. This is a serious issue and I have NO IDEA why you have raised it here.

He should take that money and go for a dietary cleansing. That stuff does miracles for the health and mind. I couldn't believe it until I saw some Chinese medicine energize my previously lethargic wife. Seriously: buying a sports car to make you feel better is a lousy choice. I'd say healthy living, healthy lifestyle and a healthy vacation.

To answer your question: "Could I live on 750k-800k?". Ans: No. If that's all he has, then spending it willy nilly on expensive sports cars is insane.
