Alaska orders

On orders for Alaska... Anyone living there help me out How many months out of the year can you drive your camaro?

On a second note.. I have to drive from FT Benning GA with one of my two cars who would ship their camaro vs driving a 4runner V6.
Really dont want to put the miles on the camaro but I also dont want a damaged shipped camaro..

Thanks for moving the thread from... makes no sense.

Lived there for 10 years..

If you get winter tires for your SS, you could theoretically drive it year round. If you don't want to drive it in the snow you are looking at late April (to avoid the melt/mud/gravel) until late August early September (maybe late Sept, depending on year).

Just a note, Alaska uses gravel and not salt on the roads, plan on some rock chips and new windshields, IT WILL HAPPEN.

What base you going to? My dad contracted on Eielson AFB.

It all depends on where you're going...

Are you going to Ft. Rich or Ft. Wainwright or? I'd consider driving the Camaro just for the fun of it, but truthfully, I'd likely opt for the 4-runner just so when the first rock smacks your windshield, you could say "Boy, I'm glad I didn't drive the Camaro!" Plus, if you get shipping damage, they are obligated to repair it...if you ding your car, it's your nickle (insurance deductible). Depending on where you're going to be stationed, there's different local 'protocols'. Good luck!

It will be FT Wainright, glad to know Ill be replacing some more windshields...

I just replaced the 4 Runners windshield from TX roads. They place down some rubber stuff and run rocks over top... Horrible roads in southern tx for road repairs anyways. Winter hit while up in WV and just ran cracks across the windshield which is expected I guess.

Fairbanks

There's somebody already on Camaro5 that lives in Fairbanks; see if you can find him. Fairbanks gets pretty cold in the winter with lots of ice fog. Plan on an engine block heater at a minimum if you plan on using the Camaro year round. Battery blanket, interior warmer and winter tires for sure. Most every parking lot has electrical plug ins for the cars, you'll need 'em. Summers are great, usually warm and sunny; perfect Camaro weather. The roads in/out of Fairbanks aren't real bad, some frost heaves of course and keep a sharp eye out for moose. They aren't like deer; they won't look at you so you won't get a reflection from their eyes; they just put their head down and walk across the roads. The 4-runner is a good Alaska car too. Enjoy your tour, this place will "get" to you; you'll love it or you'll hate it. Nobody is neutral about Alaska, that's for sure! We love it, been here for 35 years.

AK Mike pretty much hit it on the head.

Also if you plan on living off base, my recommendation is somewhere off badger road between the base an North Pole . There should be plenty of places to rent, great people, kids (if you have them) will go to North Pole elementary/high school instead of in Fairbanks, and the back gate to Wainright is a major intersection off badger.

good luck, enjoy the deployment, the first winter is the worst, you acclimate more and more every winter there.
