Broken Valve stem????

Well my car is in the shop for a stage 2 cam upgrade and tune....I already had Kook's LT's and full exhaust on with the STOCK tune...and a CAI....my baseline was 425rwhp....My guy starts the install and when removing one of the rocker arms he finds a broken valve stem in the tip area...He says he has never seen this and it just should not happen..Now the fun part to deal with the General for warranty work...He said I probably would have never known as it was still holding together...in a way I'm glad I went in for this upgrade or it may have been an issue down the road....I just hope I don't get a run around from GM on the warranty...I do not race this car but I do some spirited driving on occasion..I'm guessing a bad valve from the factory?? anyone else seen this at all??

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. My initial guess is that you are in for a long, hard fight to get this covered by warranty.

However, since it was never tuned you may have a chance. Definitely keep us posted on the proceedings.

I hear ya....like I said ,stock tune in place...I don't think an exhaust system would cause a failure like that

I think the part where he was installing a new cam is gonna screw you. How do you know he didn't break it? Thats what they will say. BS or not thats how it will go down.

I bet it was an intake valve because the intake rockers are offset a bit and maybe caused that.

I don't know...I'm not a mechanic...is it possible to break a valve stem while disassembling a rocker arm?? Good Question...I would hope a reputable shop would step up and admit they did it if that were the case.

If you already have the guy installing a cam & he sees a broken valve just go to GM & buy a valve & have your guy replace it. can't cost that much for a valve can it?
I say this because I bet if GM catches wind of all your mods they're not gonna cover it anyway, (or any thing else down the road).

this seems easier to me if you are going to get the cam and tune in the future anyway. If you are now not getting the cam and tune then I would fight Gm on it.

No way....

You undo the bolt and lift the rocker off... no way to break a valve stem while doing so.

You know the head has to come off to replace the valve right? So add a new head gasket, head bolt kit, labor of pulling the head and cleaning up the gasket surfaces and spilled coolant. Sounds easier and cheaper to let the dealer fix it if it is under warranty.
