Painted stripes question

I am getting some black rally stripes painted on my SIM 10' Camaro SS as we speak and had a few questions as to what to expect when it's finished. When I took the car into the guy I asked if I was going to feel a bump where the hood paint and the stripe paint meet and he said yes a little and that there's really no way around it with added material (paint) over the hood even with sanding the original paint as they did. I went to look at the car today and I could feel it pretty good. My question is, is this normal, or are these guys doing a shabby job? I also had to point out some mistakes in the pin striping around the main stripes. They said they used 2 coats of clear over the hood and deck lid and also was wondering if that is normal as well. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I had my stripes painted on, there is one spot where you can feel a slight bump, but the rest is smooth. They used two coats of clear on mine as well.

If you slide you fingers across the stripes.... you should NOT feel ANYTHING! If you do... well I would check around. My Dealers Body Shop showed me what a finished set of stripes will look like and FEEL LIKE! You could SEE the STRIPES BUT you could NOT FEEL THEM! Quoted $1300 as shown!

You should not feel any bumps if they were cleared over.

Wouldn't the clear coat just add to the bump? I am assuming you have experience with painted stripes so I ask you, does it sound like this guy is tryng to save $ by not smoothing out the stripes or he flat out doesn't know what he's doing? Would you know a way to fix the bump or does it sound like a re do? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to know what to say to this guy tomorrow if it 's still bumpy. Thanks.

A painter is always going to put clear over color. What you feel or don't feel is dependent on the sanding job, and if they do just the stripes, or coat the entire hood with clear also.
You can run the risk of getting a very slightly darker look if you put multiple coats of clearcoat on. Depends on how sharply you look at things.

when u paint on top of paint it will alway be higher. the more hands of paint u put on the higher the bump. extra hands of clear coat and then sand it and polish it. remember that the rest of the car is not sanded and polish u will end up with a show car finish on the hood and the rest of the car will still fave the factory look.

When I mentioned putting on more clear he told me that to much clear coat can look weird or fail down the road. Does this make sense to anyone? Anyway, I'm just going to demand he smooth out the stripes before I pay. I just hope he knows how. This sucks because I have never had custom paint done to any of my cars.

I have a slight bump on my painted stripes. He cleared the whole car after painting the stripes... But i also didn't pay much, so i am completely happy.

No bumps on mine. As noted in several posts, it's about the sanding process that's used, or not used.
