Exclamation Please help! - L99 + Vortech (V-3 si) + 3.33 pulley + Kooks full (1 7/8" headers, 3")

from forum post: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96246

I originally installed the Vortech V-3 Si kit on my L99 (Automattic V8 w/ VVT) and got an amazing 170HP increase over stock. Putting me at 483 RWHP.

I wanted more HP so I ordered the following:
-Kooks full exhaust package 1 7/8" headers, hi flow cats, xpipe, mufflers, 3" piping.
-Vortech Fuel Pump Voltage Booster
-Vortech 3.47 and 3.33 pulley.
-Custom Tune by Vortech

After the following upgrades I only got 20 HP increase! Putting me at 503 RWHP

I can't seem to get the boost over 8.8PSI. We removed the idler pulley and the belt is on TIGHT AS ALL HELL. We checked for air vacuum leaks and there are no leaks.

The first pull we did produced 530HP but we have not be able to get similar results after that.

We think it might be the VVT kicking out the extra boost. If this is true is it possible to tune this out?

Can someone please help out, I'm hurting over here.

This dyno is with a 3.47 pulley, showing PSI boost

The following dynos are with a 3.33 pulley (at/close sea level altitude)

More experience with procharger, but I would check for belt slip even though it is tight. Buy a gatorback. Check for a leaky BOV.

Sounds like a possible timing problem. Also check boost with a known good mechanical gauge. Sometimes boost gauges can read off if they have never validated the calibration.

Also I would check for a blown pipe that has came apart. Sometimes they are easy to miss.

If you want have your tuner call me on Monday. We will get this worked out for ya. No need to sweat it. Sure its a simple fix.

Last but not least. Dyno's are only a tuning tool. Dont get distracted by #'s. All dyno's read differently even when they are the same brand.

What was your baseline HP?

Hope this helps.

My rwhp before the addons was 483 then 503 on the same dyno machine.
We tried manual boost gauge and it was the same.
I'll have Sean give you a call Monday.

Thanks mike

Your in California, you have an L99, you are on 91 octane fuel, all you should expect is 503 with a 3.33 pulley.

With 93 octane and 3.33 pulley, on L99s we see 525 RWHP consistantly fully warmed up.

When you make the first pull with a Vortech it can be artificially High because everything is cold, I have seen this many times, I throw that Dyno sheet out and work with the ones that repeat over and over.

That still doesn't explain why the boost is so low. I should be getting 9.5 to 10psi at my altitude.

20hp increase after adding 5k worth of upgrades? It's like WTF

I'm pretty sure it's directly related to the boost being low. It's gotta be leaking somewhere

You're at sea level right? What PSI you get with 3.33?

Would you recommend going down to a 3.12" pulley then?
that should put me around 9.5PSI

Do you Own a Shovel?

You will need it to pick up the pieces of Piston that shoot out the tail pipes

You will need, Water Meth Injection or Race fuel, and Our MSD FPVB Kit and another custom tune to run that much boost on 91 octane.

ok, Thanks Ted.

Had I known this I wouldnt have spent so much to upgrade the full exhaust and fuel pump for 20 hp.

I still think I can gain more. I have faith in Mike rmcr

Also keep in mind that the upgrades have improved the flow of the engine and thus increasing boost becomes more and more difficult. That's really not a bad thing either as you can thus make more power at less boost.

Not saying that is the total solution....just something to consider.

Can toss in octaine booster on each fill up. Really sounds like you should put in a meth setup.
