Oh woe is me!! Will I be happy with the SS?
If GM releases the Z/28 in late 2011, I think I won't buy it. That means I won't buy it until 2012 because I won't drive it in the 2011 winter. That means I will "settle" for the SS because I can't wait 2 friggin years! (from today)
Assuming I won't drive on the track, will I be happy with the SS in the long-term? People keep saying that once you get used to the HP, you want more. I wanted to jump straight to the Z/28 because I want to avoid wasting money switching down the road (especially if I'm going to sink money into the car). I anticipate based on my past behaviour that I will want more. The Z/28 is the package, out of the box it looks different from run-of-the-mill Camaros that by the end of 2011 will have swamped the roads, and out of the box it has track handling and power. I don't have to buy an SS, eventually see the Z/28 on the road, and then experience envy and regret. On the other hand, the SS might ALWAYS make me happy. I don't know since I've never been in this situation. So to answer this question, I think the best way would be look at your own past behaviour. Have you purchased a performance car in the past, only to have better performing cars released a few years later, and still you stuck with your performance car because it was *enough*? I suspect that few people can actually answer this question, since the fact you bought a 2010 Camaro says that whatever you had before was clearly *not* enough. But who knows, some of you may *still* have your previous car or have the experience of a performance car you bought decades ago. Thanks!

so you dont get the SS and wait for the venerable Z/28. Then the amazing super dupery Z/OMG gets released will you be happy with the Z/28? Or what about the amazing Stingray Corvette concept? I type this as I am about to go enjoy the SS I have NOW......just sayin. Cheers and good luck K |

Be different if only for the moment, buy the 2011 Z28, it might not be available from Obama Motors in 2012 with the supercharged V8.
$7500 supercharger added to the SS will give you the same HP. Not sure about the brake, suspension, & badging upgrade cost. Oh yeah....the HOOD! No mail slot....

Many here have made this exact decision already. Including me. Of course it wasn't quite as tough since it was more than two years to wait. At the time, it could have been two years but simantics.
I decided to just buy the SS and mod later. A stock Z-28, whatever it may have, can be caught with mods. Right down to the suspension. May cost more in the end, but not too much more imo considering. The Exterior can be moded to even exeed the Z-28 if needs be. This is what I may do. Trading in mine at that point would be even more costly so my mods have already begun. I'm cool with it. Totaly. |

I've established that my tolerance level for wait is about 6 months. I've waited about 5 months now, and I'm going a little nuts. If I hear later on down the road that it will be a late 2011 Z/28, I'm going to cry.
In the end, I am likely going to go the safe financial route and wait for the Z/28, but I'm trying to reason with myself to settle for an SS just in case. I want a plan B. What makes the wait a lot worse, is not having a plan B. I WISH that the Shelby were up to the task of being a plan B, but the log rear axle and ugly sticking out block-of-wood bum takes it out of the equation.

The problem with waiting is there will always be something exciting coming down the pike maybe worth waiting for. All I know is that I am thrilled with my decision to get this car. I am having more fun than I have in a long time driving. I tend to over hype things but this car is better than i imagined it would be. It delivered big time. My advice, get the SS now and start having some fun. Life is too short to wait.

I think the z will be marked up big time (+tax) so consider what is realistic financially.

Thanks for the answers so far.
I can pose the question another way: As a purely street driver who finds 0-60mph in 5.9s boring and severely lacking, would the acceleration punch in the SS be enough to keep me excited? I don't drive recklessly, and the main times I would accelerate would be at around the 60-68mph (100-110km/h) mark overtaking someone, and from stop. I'm thinking that there is a point in sensible street conditions, where one cannot experience greater thrills due to the limits UNLESS one brings the car to the track to exceed those limits. The question is, will I reach that street limit in the SS? I'm hoping that I can NEVER reach that street limit in the SS because the SS has more performance than I could experience on the street. What's your opinion? Would I reach that street limit in the SS?

Get the SS and put $10k into a Super Charger and some handling mods and you will have your Z without having to wait.
