I painted red right over the black fuse box cover and the silver engine cover with no primer or base coat.

And the two look the same shade of red? I just don't want to get them both painted and realize they look like two different shades of red because of starting out with a different base color (black and silver)

Yep. All I did in my original post was wash everything down with a little dishwashing liquid to degrease, let dry and paint. No thinner. No alcohol (other than beer ), sanding or baescoat/primer.

Several months later......

Still haven't learned to reduce picture size.

I just did mine today as well .........Here is a little trick for some of you if you want your Lettering (Cheverolet) to be Black ....Just Block Sand the Silver of the top of the lettering before you do anything ...Then spray on your Basecoat.....Wait for your Basecoat to dry and then use a small wooden Block and sand your Orange, red,Yellow what ever color you have back down to the Black and then Clear it ...And it looks awesome ........I will post pictures tomorrow

I think they do. My pics are on page 5 I think.

Doing white first won't hurt anything and probably depends a lot on the final color you are going after.

The other guy said with his orange he noticed a difference. I can see how that makes sense. But the red I used is dark enough to probably cover the black better than the orange.

Ok here is my engine cover

Like I wrote earlier if you want your (Chevrolet) Lettering Black all you have to do before you start is to Block Sand untop of the Silver Letters until you get down to the Black Plastic and thats where you stop ....Next step is to go ahead and spray on your Base Color, ones thats dry take your Sanding Block again and Block sand untop of the letters sanding away the Base down to the Black .....Now all you have to do is spray on your Clear coat

Yeah it makes it easy when you have a full warehouse of Spray guns .....Our little Sata Mini Jets works great for little items like the Engine Cover

Jeff, you did a fantastic job and your engine cover looks SWEET. Don't short sell yourself because someone else spent more money than you!
