I can see there is a lot of work for this, but the results will be worth it. I'd be interested in your report on painting the CHEVROLET with a paint pen, as well as seeing pictures of the final product. Good luck as you continue.

Just to throw my two cents out there on the paint pen.....
I tried the paint pen myself and it didn't work out so great. The problem I had was maintaining the flow of paint that came out of the pen. A little pressure on the tip and the paint will start coming out really fast. That's what happened to me on a couple of the letters. Then the paint tried to run and was thicker on parts of the letters than others. If you wait even 15 seconds or so to start spreading out the thicker paint it already has started to dry and then gets real clumpy on the letters. I ended up using vinyl letters. It was probably the most expensine part of the whole deal but after sanding and spraying my cover about 4 different times I didn't have the patients any more. I'm not trying to deter you from using the paint pen but just be aware of the issues I had. Plus I would recommned you try to find something similar that you can practice on to get the hang of it.

As several others have done, I did my lettering with a wide tip sharpie. I taped off the top and bottom of the lettering (but not between them) and then added two coats with the sharpie. It was very easy, didn't run and looks exactly like paint. They come in quite a few different colors at a hobby store. just make sure to get the extra wide one and the flat tip will cover the whole width of the letter in one pass.

engine cover lettering
OK, having a problem deciding on if to put the "PERFORMANCE DIVISION"
sticker on engine cover. Yes it looks nice, but............... 1. The only performance division GM ever had was the High Performance division, which got canned by the beancounters in 2009. 2. the current performance division is nothing more than a ECO division with more latte sipping gloBULL warmers than real engineers Does anyone know if there is even a Racing or Motorsport division, department, watercooler discussion group left in GM?? Would like to put something on the engine cover that reflected some level of racing heritage or the current GS and GT racing camaro efforts. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks. |

Just got the painted engine cover back from the painter (again). They did much better this time.
I added a brushed trim ring (from Emblem Pros) to the V8 on the front which looks really good.

To be fair, I've only tried the black sharpie, so I'm not sure how the other colors would look. The black came out perfect.

I want to paint my engine cover and fuse box red. Can I just clean them really good and spray the red or do I need to lay down a couple costs of white first like i've seen some of you do?

Jeff - giantsfan said he wants to paint both engine cover AND fusebox cover red. In that case, would you recommend he used white as a primer on both so he's starting with a similar base? That sounds like a good idea to me, but since I'm ultimately painting white, there's no primer for me to use
