Recommended Gas
So i am waiting patiently for my Camaro, trying to learn as much as i can about it before i get it. What gas is recommended to use in a 2011 Camaro 2LT, which is better for performance, and which is better to use for mileage? Suggestions please.

87 is recommended for v6. I'm pretty sure using 93 just means less knocking, not better performance. So there is no gas that is "better for performance"... atleast as far as I know
Edit: I stand corrected, higher octane gives slightly better performance apparently but imo not enough to warrant the extra cost of premium gas if its a daily driver Last edited by ihaveacamaro; 07-29-2010 at 10:17 PM. |

The manual says that you only need 87 or higher, but we have found that higher octane is better. I suggest 93. Do a search and you will agree...

That said, some people on the boards with electro-toys have found that timing does retard with 87 and 91 seems to put out slightly better numbers. 87 octane is not always 87, though...bad gas does exist. |

If the knock sensors detect knock it will retard your timing and make the car slower.

Knock is when the fuel pre-detonates from pressure before the spark is added. The higher octane fuel won't detonate as easily.

In my owners manual, as it reads on page 8-44 (Driving and Operating):
Recommended Fuel If the vehicle has the 3.6L V6 engine (VIN Code V), use regular unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 87 or higher. If this engine is only rated for 87 octane then why the reference "or higher" even used in the sentence. I was using 87 octane fuel in my Camaro when i first got it for the first couple of months. Camaro ran really good, but when I changed to 93 octane my car seemed to just run better. So I ran 93 octane for about two weeks, then I went back to 87 octane fuel for about two weeks. My feeling are this: My fuel millage did not get better, I still get somewhere between 27 - 31 on hwy. (I can check this) My Horsepower level did not go up I still get 312 hp at peak. ( I can not check this so I will not make any claims) What I believe is my power band got more consitant , and the engine cleaned up, I don't really know, but I do know that it runs a whole lot better with 93 octane than 87 octane. Now believe me, if there were not any difference on fuels for my car I would just run 87 octane, but I can feel a difference in the way it runs so I choose to use 93 octane

Has anybody ran it with 10 or 15% ethanol? Does that make a noticeable difference?
