On one hand I believe him, because at 18 I had been working for 4 years on my own car, a '55 Chevy... and had bought and sold cars and worked at a burger stand to make the money it took to fix it all up into a show winner... granted, this was in 1984-88... and I used to get a lot of the "Is that your dad's car" and "who bought that for you" comments when I had done most if it myself, and financially, all myself.

The day I bought it for $500... I was 14.

After rebuilding it... cost me about $8000 to build it up like this in 1980's dollars...

On the other hand... now that we have computers... it's even easier to bull shit your way into making people think you are more than you really are.

This thread could go on for days... and he's probably having the last laugh watching us get all worked up.

Be honest, if most of you are jealous just admit it and move on. Didn't mommy or daddy teach you guys anything? "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all."
When someone says they worked to pay for the car, getting your dads SSI checks does not count as working to buy the car. And what kind of allowance could you have had as a kid to save up that much? i got like 5 bucks a week!

Sorry it just doesn't make sense and we need more info becuase more often than not the story is less than 1/4 of what was presented here.

hmmmmmm so you chose the camaro

Not sure I would have gone that route....I mean you have lets see 2 cars and motorcycle....each go for what about 10,000 or so....then you have a 40,000 Camaro....Think I would have sold the 2 cars and the bike...you would have had 70,000 to play with....Thats just me...Or kept one car sold the other two and still had 60,000 or more to play with....Dont get me wrong LOVE the camaro but lots of other nicer cars at that price point...Everyone different though...

I'm sorry for your loss. I had an ex whose mother passed away, so I am familiar with your social security income.

That being said, doesn't that make your point moot? You have to see that buying three cars with an income supplemented by a large monthly social security payment is nowhere near the same situation as your average 18 year old saving his or her pennies from flipping burgers.

Most of us were 18 once, and I worked my ass off doing paper routes, working on farms, construction and scuba diving to clean boat bottoms. I worked harder and for more money that many in my high school. And, I sure as hell couldn't afford to buy a brand new 1981 car when I was 18. I bought a used 73 Dodge Charger SE for 1 grand.

I did, at 21, get money from something set aside by my parents. I bought a motorocycle and put the rest into investments.

So, can 18 or 21 year olds have the money? Sure...but very few 18 year olds are going to be making more than 30 grand a year these days. VERY FEW.

So, as someone else pointed out, there are a few likely scenarios.

1) All BS.
2) Got money from parents or parents are funding the rest of his life (the most likely).
3) Selling Drugs (also possible...and almost as likely).
I agree with you that many teens out there are doing nothing with their life today. It's sad, but that shouldn't characterize every teen out there. Maybe he actually does have a good job? Maybe the Camaro is sitting on a 6 year loan? You don't know the kid, so you can't make any judgment's. Who knows, maybe he does sell drugs. Or he could be one of the lucky kids who is doing something good with their life and maybe an opportunity came up for him that can make his dreams come true. Like i said, you don't know him so unless he says otherwise you can only believe what he tells you.

Now everyone, leave the kid alone.

Thank you, it sucks sometimes to think about it but my father was really never there for me.

Anyways, who said he was flipping burgers? There are a lot of kids out there who actually want a future, unlike the gangsters, drug dealers, and kids like that. You would be surprised to see what some kids are doing for jobs right now.

I work at a pizza hut, and a performance shop. I am not no certified mechanic so i pretty much do a lot of bitch work, but the owner lets me work with him on the cars and i learn A LOT. So when i go to college next year, i will have knowledge that most kids do not when starting into a career that they want to pursue. There are still some kids who care in this world! don't give up on us yet! lol

Pics or no pics... I gotta call BS.

Having pictures of you in, or with, a car doesn't mean it's necessarily yours. I had my picture taken in the Knight Rider Trans-Am about 25 years ago. Does that mean it's mine?

Somehow, I think this is more likely the story here:

We're playing. Hence the 'Pics or it ain't true' moniker.

I'm just saying, the cars you mentioned would retail at over 100k all together. Hell, I'd have bought me a house.

Don't take it personally.

Just saying that it's hard to believe an 18yo could save 100k, or so, in 8 years if they aren't getting some serious help.
